Sat Subject Tests: How Many Do You Need?

I recently heard that only two sat subjects would required for college application. I am not really sure of this information, so can anyone verify/confirm that info?

I know it used to be 3 subject tests, but after the new SAT came out, the ETS eliminated writing, so people are saying that only two subject tests are required now.

It depends what schools you are applying to.

Yale Harvard Princeton Etc.

I think you need 3 then. I am not 100% sure though.

Yale, Harvard, Princeton still want 3 as does MIT and Georgetown.

But if you took the old writing then that still counts as a subject test.

You need 3, and several of those schools ask for 3 tests from different fields (ie: Math+History+Science OR Math+Langauage+English, etc...)

Er...I'm pretty sure you need 3 for class of 2006 and 2 for '07 and beyond. I had the same question and asked a few admissions people about it. They all said that since for class of 2006, both new and old SATs would be accepted, they want 3 SAT 2s. For my year (2007), only the new SAT will be accepted and the writing section will be considered one of the SAT 2s and then they want two others. I know MIT is like this (though MIT wants a math, a science and the writing section specifically) and I'm pretty sure HYP say any 2 SAT 2s for '07 and beyond.

Look at the link that pimpa10 posted - it has policies and links for a lot of different colleges

Does anyone know how much you will benefit if you take MORE than the required, whether it be 2 or 3. Cause, I've seen people accepted to HYPS who have taken 4-6 SAT II's. Is it worth it?

If they got 800s on all of them it probably looks really impressive. If someone has the required 3, and got an 800 on all 3 of them and someone else went way above and took 6 and STILL got 800s on all of them, the latter'll probably get the preference. The 3 is, after all, just the bare minimum.

wow this is strange...each year my school has 2 or 3 people go to ivy league schools and NONE of them EVER take any sat subject tests- i really dont think they are required.... if they are absolutely required then the only explanation i have is that i live in mississippi, in which every highschool student is required to take the act and the only people who take sat's are those trying to go out of state, and they only take the sat I, taking sat subject tests is unheard of around here........so what im getting at is perhaps ivy league schools understand that there is 0 pressure in the state to take sat IIs and just overlook it-but anyway i know more than ten people that got into ivy league schools without ever taking sat II's

For a lot of colleges, the ACT subscores count as SAT IIs. THat could be how they get into the Ivies - they send in their ACT score.

my counselor said to be safe and take 3! if they want 2, they'll take the highest anyway so nothing to lose:)

So take 3? Perhaps it's safest route to take
I know that Princeton and Yale all want to see 3 subject scores
