SAT Subject Tests...how much do they matter?

So I'm a senior right now with a good GPA, a 2280 combined SAT (800 W 770 M 710 CR/V). My extracurriculars are pretty good. Anyway, I'm applying to Princeton, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, UPenn for Biological/Biomedical/Bioengineering. My SAT subject test scores are US History 760, Chemistry 730, and Math II 640.

The 640 is not good, I know. How much will this hurt me?

Thanks anyone who offers a reply.

As a short answer, a lot. They don’t necessary help you, but they can hurt you a lot. The Sat is only helpful up to a certain point, where then scores can change from 2200 to 2400 from test dates. Sat subject tests have a nice curve so you should get a good score if you deserve one and they have tough problems that are more at the level at the high caliber schools (1+X=3, solve for x isn’t a telling problem for people trying to get into Yale).

They will hurt you a lot to schools who require them or recommend them.

Luckily, I tend to think that colleges focus much more on SAT reasoning scores. Your other scores are fine, by the way, but I kind of don’t get how you got 770 M and 640 Math II…

The Math II 640 was a surprise. I do fine in school and well in other tests (Math Olympiad). I did take the Subject Tests all on one day…I don’t think that will affect anything though.

Any other opinions?

bummmmmppppppp

I think that they will help you if they’re great, hurt you if they’re terrible, and do nothing if they’re anywhere from 650ish to 750ish.

I’m in the same situation as you, except with physics. I’m applying to princeton for engineering so I need to submit my physics score which is a mediocre 670. While I don’t think it’ll get my app thrown out, it definitely won’t help. Hopefully my November physics score goes up and makes it in time to be considered in scea!

I don’t think you should worry too much about the 640. You have two great scores that you should be proud of. If you’re applying RD to those schools, I would recommend taking the next available SAT II (today was one of those days). I, myself, received an 800 on US and a 710 on Bio/E and am sending them to Vanderbilt for ED. Some people tell me they’re strong, some say they’re alright; it all depends on the school, I guess.

Thanks.

I’ve heard that because the scores are typically so high in Math II, expectations are high. Is this necessarily true, or does it work in the opposite direction because those very talented in math usually take it?

That question goes for anyone.

bummmmmmppppp

honestly i plan on majoring in the humanities but all my math and science sat IIs are 700+
i would just not submit that score because that percentile is not that high at all and your sat 1 score for math is plenty
