How greatly do the subject tests influence your admissions decision? I know that they are "strongly recommended," but I'm curious as to how much they will affect you. A fellow student of mine (who has nearly the same GPA and test scores - although his may be /slightly/ higher) who isn't taking SAT Subject Tests while I am. Not to mention I've had a huge upward trend from a bad sophomore year-mostly B's-while his has been consistent A's/B's. Let's say I get over 700-750 on both of mine, will I have a better chance at getting in?

It’s hard to answer your question because you seem to want a quantifiable answer. There are no formulas in our process. We don’t assign scores to the different parts of an application.

Ahh, sorry about that! I was actually looking for more of a subjective answer; my rhetoric says otherwise. Oops.

My question basically is do the SAT IIs give applicants a boost? And, though I know there is not a direct way to answer this, “how” much of a boost? I’m really trying to help my cause however I can because according to Naviance, I’m right at the waitlist/acceptance borderline. It’s scary! :P

It seems that basically what laurora wants to know is whether SAT IIs are considered in admission.

I’m in the exact same situation laurora. I’m right on the border. I read somewhere that SAT II’s are “highly recommended” at UVA. I mean I’m taking 2 this December and January but I don’t think I’m prepared enough to recieve the scores I want (or that will help me)

@UVAorBust - I can completely relate. Regardless, I hope that the SAT II’s have at least some weight in the admissions process.

Yea I just searched Dean J’s blog. She said that if SAT II’s are highly recommended than a student should almost definitely take them. Basically you should take SAT II’s to be competitive. I have yet to take them and I’m starting to worry. I was looking on her blog and saw the stats of all these kids who were denied and they blow most applicants out of the water.
