If a school requires subject test but, you haven't taken it by the app deadline, can you/should you still apply?

ie, app deadline 1/1/11, subject test date 1/22/11

No one knows on this entire site?

This totally depends on the school. There is no magic chart that tells you which school will accept January testing scores (though I desperately wished there was!). You, like all other applicants, have to find each school’s policy on this.

For example, I am applying to Cornell, which does not accept January scores. This means that I had all my subject test scores (along with Reasoning) sent in. However, I am also applying to Brown, an institution that does accept January subject test scores.

Check with each individual school’s website-use google, it’s the fastest way. I usually type in (school name) january sat or (school name) january scores.

Cheers!

That’s tough… I had a similar problem except I had already taken subject tests. You need to call the college and ask the admissions people. Most colleges won’t allow you to apply though because your application would be incomplete. They get really ticked off when students try to take the tests last minute, but ask ask ask because some colleges will allow it.

Sorry RainbowSprinkles I just posted that not seeing yours.

HARVARD
“We recommend that students complete their standardized testing by the December series and have scores reported promptly. January test results may also be submitted for consideration.”

BROWN
“You are welcome to take advantage of the Score Choice option, but we strongly urge you to have completed all your required testing by the December 5th SAT test date, and that you have arranged for your results to be sent directly to Brown on or before our January 1st Regular Decision deadline. We would not be able to read your application until we receive a full set of official test scores, so it is to your advantage for us to have those test results in hand by the end of December. You may still submit scores from the January administration of the SAT, and they would be added to your file.”

CORNELL
“All required application materials, including standardized tests, are due on January 3. Students taking the SAT or SAT Subject Tests in January should know that scores from the January test date may not reach us in time to be reviewed with your application. If Cornell was not listed as a recipient for your scores at the time of the exam, please arrange to have your scores rushed to us so that they may be considered with your application.”

DARTMOUTH
“(under the January column) Last Available Standardized Testing Date - All Applicants”

Actually Cornell does accept January tests. It just says that those may not arrive on time to be considered (meaning a decisioon could be made on you before they arrive) but to assure they do arrive in time to be considered you should designate Cornell as one of your free sends. Fact is that if you have not sent SAT II tests before the January tests, they really have to “arrive on time” because Cornell won’t make a decision on your file until there are two SAT II scores in it.

All ivies accept Jan tests but like Cornell some mention that you must get it there in time usually by designating the college as one of your automatic sends in the application for the test. Many oither colleges with early Jan app deadlines accept Jan scores (often under the same conditions as Cornell). Check their sites and see what they say.

OK, thanks. It appears NYU is out for me if they don’t accept January subject tests

@drusba, oops! That’s what I meant. If you don’t have the required subject test scores in and your Jan scores don’t come in on time, you’re basically done.

No NYU is not out as long as you have taken the SAT. Beginning weith applicants applying now NYU has a new systerm for meeting score requirement. You can submit either SAT OR ACT OR three SAT II scores OR three AP scores. Thus if you submit SAT it will be used for admission and SAT IIs will be ignored.

okay one question
For Harvard, Brown, and Dartmouth, I submitted SAT I and one subject test. I plan to take another subject test in January and submit those with registration (fastest way)-is this okay? I know H B and D all accept January scores, but what if it’s to fulfill the requirement?

drusba,

Just to clarify, I don’t even need to take the subject tests for NYU?

RainbowSprinkles: As long as you designate them as automatic sends with your registration (such as your free sends) you will be fine.

stage4survivor: precisely, all you need to submit to NYU is SAT (I am assuming you have that).

I will send them with registration for sure. I heard it’s even faster than rush reports, so that’s good. Thanks, drusba.

@stage4survivor:

"No preferential treatment is given to any one of the following standardized test options in our admission process. Applicants for admission to NYU’s New York City campus are required to submit one of the following:

The SAT Reasoning Test or;
The ACT (with Writing Test) or;
Three SAT Subject Test scores (one in literature or the humanities, one in math or science, and one non-language test of the student’s choice) or;
Three AP exam scores earned prior to senior year (one in literature or the humanities, one in math or science, and one non-language of the student’s choice)"

google, I love thee

Yep,

10/10:
CR 690
M 610
W 600

12/10
CR 660
M 750
W 570

I presume they superscore and I believe both were auto sent, I know 12/10 was

NYU does superscore so score considered for admission will be 690/750/600 (CR/M/W)

I don’t know if they do practice Score Choice “NEW YORK UNIVERSITY Contact Institution for Information” http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat-score-use-practices-list.pdf It says to contact them.

The information in that report is from March 2009 despite saying it has been updated (which I consider partly unreliable since it is actually wrong on some colleges) before NYU made a decision on score choice. NYU accepts score choice but recommends sending all SATs since it does superscore those.

It says it’s accurate as of Sept. 24, 210. CB shouldn’t be making mistakes, but those are inevitable when you’ve got to comb through such a gigantic list of schools. I would go on the NYU forum and pester the people who were accepted ED to see what they have to say. I’m not applying to NYU, so I don’t know.
