I have taken three subject tests and I am happy with the results on all three (760 Math 1, 760 Physics, 800 Math 2). In addition, the schools that I am applying to require only 2 tests (I will send the physics and math 2 scores). Will it be an issue that these two tests are in related fields (math/science)? Do some colleges require that I take a test from another type of subject (for example, literature or language) or will it be ok that the two tests I send are in related fields?
If you’re only going to send in two tests, send the Physics and one of the Math. That will at least be more diverse than the two math levels.
I think it’s fine that they are in similar subject areas as long as you are hoping to pursue a STEM major. If you’re looking into English, however, it will seem a bit strange. But with a science/math major, your (hopefully good) SAT/ACT scores in those areas will be fine to demonstrate proficiency.
I would not bother sending in the Math I if you’re planning on sending in Math II (which you should).
I’d recommend something in the humanities or another science if you need 3. If you score as highly in a humanities subject as you did in physics, I’d send that.
Don’t try to read between the lines. If a college wanted 1 STEM and 1 humanities test, they would say so. Sending Math 2 and Physics is perfectly fine. Congrats on the great scores.
You actually have only two SAT subject tests that qualify to meet any requirements. Schools that require subject tests generally want them in different subjects and thus your two math tests count only as one.
The combination of math 2 and physics is actually one of the best combinations to have because for all colleges that require or recommend subject tests, you meet the requirements or recommendations for any program, with one exception, Georgetown, which stands alone as the only college that wants three, rather than two, subject tests. Thus, as long as you are not intending to apply to Georgetown, you are fine.
Note that you can send just the two tests to most colleges but be aware that a few colleges including Yale require you to provide all subject tests you have taken if you provide any.
Indeed, even if you send in all 3, they would only count them as two as Math1 and Math2 are the same subject. There is no reason to take Math1 if you are at Math2 level. Obviously, you see the outcome in your scores too. One math and one science is perfect for STEM at any school that require 2 subject test scores. You should still look up the requirement for each school/program you are applying to though. Some programs may require specific subjects and perhaps more than 2 too, e.g. Integrated Science at Northwestern University.
Thank you! I am not applying to Georgetown, Northwestern, or any college that requires more than two scores- so as long as two tests from the STEM fields will be ok for the colleges I am applying to, I don’t think I’ll waste any more money on taking other tests. Thanks everyone
It really depends on the school, and what major/program you are applying to. Example: Cornell Arts and Sciences wants two of your choice, but Engineering wants one of them to be in Math. Same for Carnegie Mellon, as an example. Make sure you are submitting per the guidelines of where you are applying.
