I got a 740 Math I, 730 Math II (I was sick when I took it but can’t take it again), and 770 U.S. History. I’m applying to Northwestern, NYU, Brown, USC (Southern California not South Carolina), Harvard, Stanford, University of Washington, University of Maryland, Cal Poly SLO, and Sarah Lawrence. Should I bother sending any of these scores?
And I’ll add that I’m basically just applying for film studies or ethnic studies majors, not math ones. However, I consider myself to be very good at math (I have an 800 on the SAT, and I’ve never gotten below a 97% in any high school math course, even in honors precalculus which I took in 8 weeks) and my versatility and strength in many different areas is something that I consider to be a helpful factor on my application. Does submitting something as low as a 730 Math 2 hurt me?
And, if anyone knows if I’m REQUIRED to send scores to any of these schools, please let me know, as I was struggling to find information on that.
Your scores are great! It is pretty easy to find the testing requirements for those schools - and they are usually laid out very clearly. If you are submitting via Common App, each college’s requirements are listed there as well.
In general, very few schools REQUIRE SAT subject tests now but many still RECOMMEND them which most interpret as you should really take them and submit them. It is more typical to see them required for home schooled students.
Northwestern: https://admissions.northwestern.edu/faqs/high-school-courses/ While SAT Subject Tests are optional for most undergraduate applicants, scores from SAT Subject Tests are required for applicants to the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME), the Integrated Science Program (ISP) and applicants who have been home-schooled.
Stanford: https://admission.stanford.edu/apply/freshman/testing.html SAT Subject Tests are optional. Because SAT Subject Test scores can highlight your areas of strength, we welcome the self-reporting of these results in your application.
I think you can find the info for the rest of the schools you are interested in quite easily… just search each school and “SAT subject tests”.
I think these scores are just fine (particularly the US History) and you should send them to any school where they are required or recommended. Check the school’s websites (I know Brown recommends for example). If you don’t send them, they will assume that you scored poorly on them and so decided not to submit which isn’t the case at all.
Cal Poly SLO does not consider SAT subject test scores. I think your test scores are fine for all the schools that require or recommend them.
Thank you all for your insight and reassurance!
@drumminggeek87 - I have 2 kids that are NU alums. One was admitted ED and one RD & neither sent any SAT 2 scores. An NU AdCom explained to my son that he would only need to send SAT 2s if he wanted to show strength in an area that was not brought out by grades and/or test scores. Good Luck - but it looks like you can’t go wrong with any of the schools on your list!
Just your math 2 and ush, don’t need to send math 1.
