SAT Subject Tests

I got:

750 Math I
760 Physics
780 USH

In the general scheme of things, are these weak? Strong? I'm thinking for the typical student it's a little weak, especially that embarrasing math score.

lol hey that's what i got! embarassing only if you're applying to harvard. :) For Math I, considering no curve at all, that's pretty decent. What's embarassing is my 740 Math IIC score....retake!

They are absolutely FINE. :)

brand_182, a 740 math2C is absolutely fine as well. I got a 750 on the math2C (after retaking a 700 2C) and I was admitted.

the admissions officers hardly have the time nor the patience to nitpick about SAT scores. my interviewer actually told me that my SAT scores were on "the lower side" for asian harvard applicants (though i thought they were fine.. lol) and i told him that i considered the rest of my application to be far more important + representative of me than my SAT scores. and he nodded and said i was right. don't stress about SATs guys. 700+ scores are fantastic, if you ask me.

i thought harvard required/recommended (not sure which) one of the SAT IIs as Math II?

m_c....thats good to know. my SAT I and II scores are 700+, but more on the lower side (except for writing, but it doesn't count and thats my luck). I would be cool with it, but then i realized that I'd be looked at compared to other Asian (from NJ as well) applicants and that those scores might not be too hot....

I do like the idea of telling an interviewer or admissions officer which parts of your application you've deemed "more important." ; -)

your SAT II scores are really good, i don't think you need to retake anything.

how much weight do SAT II's have anyway? i'm really not a big standardized scores person, so my SAT scores aren't that great. but i've accomplished a lot. ? =/

"my interviewer actually told me that my SAT scores were on "the lower side" for asian harvard applicants"

this is why i'm not applying to harvard. that's absolute crap. i'm glad you pointed that out to him.

First congrats on the 780 for history, that's pretty hard to get
I think you should take IIC for math because IC is not useful anymore, especially for harvard

it depends on your major. if you're not really looking into going into math (presumably science too though don't quote me) then you should probably retake it. otherwise, harvard couldn't care less whether you take math I or II

haha, it might have come off as a little snarky but i was a bit surprised, to tell you the truth! some people (especially on CC lol) might not have thought my scores were very high but i was plenty happy with them. i think my interviewer was actually just pointing out the fact that many asians study intensively for SATs to get that 2400 or 800 and it was clear from my scores (especially math lol) that i had not done so. anyway :) i figure in 10 years i won't even remember my SAT scores haha.

aww i don't think that should deter you from applying! it was just an offhand remark by my very interesting+nice interviewer. anyway, i'm sure that harvard doesn't nitpick about SATs. i know several individuals who have been denied admission with 2400s and/or 800s under their belt.

ahh thank you m_C that's encouraging.

m_c: I think that your interviewer was covertly testing you; perhaps he/she felt that all the Asian applicants he/she interviewed had a perfect score complex.

When I was deferred EA, my admissions officer asked me, "Well, aren't you a bit annoyed at the fact another person from your HS was accepted?" I was a bit surprised at the question.

I responded, "Well, I clearly am not in a position to judge, since you have been an admissions officer for a long time, but if receiving an acceptance letter was like successfully passing through a mountain, the EA acceptee took the tunnel - I'm just going to climb right on up and still end up in the same place."

My admissions officer then said, "You're right! Best of luck to you," and then our conversation ended right there. Come March 31, 2005, I was accepted.

man that is witty you deserved to get in with a response on the spot like that

xjayz, that's pretty frickin awesome. congrats :)

that can be like a quote.. ! :)
