SAT Subjects Score Choice?

I signed up for two subject tests for this coming weekend. I'm more or less ready because of AP studying, but haven't had a chance to (and probably won't be able to) work in SAT subject prep books.

Since Score Choice is available for subject tests too, it would be to my advantage to take these two tests anyway this Saturday, right? And if I don't like my scores, I can just retake?

Someone refresh my memory here, but did I read recently that the SAT II had changed and no longer counted off for wrong answers? The SAT I docks 1/4 point for a wrong answers, and the ACT does not take off anything. Somewhere recently I thought I read that the SAT II has adoped the ACT policy and that now pure guessing is not held against you.

^^^ that’s only for APs in may 2011, SAT IIs stay the same

@placido240, that’s only for APs. I guess that means the curves for APs will be harsher…But back on topic, do you know anything about SAT Subject score choice?

Yes, you can choose individual scores on subject tests.

So taking the tests on Saturday as a “practice run” wouldn’t hurt, right?

Score Choice applies to the SAT IIs. You can choose which you want to send to colleges. Note that both Stanford and Yale require you to send to them ALL of your SATs, SAT IIs, and ACTs.

but they would never know if u didn’t send one right? i did pretty badly on one and there’s no way i want them to see it.

i would like to know this as well. esp. in regards to stanford

As to their knowing whether you took the test, check with your high school. Many high schools put all your scores on your official high school transcript that is sent to colleges.

There are colleges that require you to send all SAT and SAT IIs and you ned to check the rules of each college. Stanford, mentioned above, is not one of those – it requires all SAT scores but allows you to choose the SAT IIs to send. Yale however does require all SAT II scores if you are relying on the SAT for admission – it accepts ACT in lieu of both the SAT and SAT IIs and if you want to rely only on ACT you need not send any SATs or SAT IIs.

Can I send ACT and SAT II score but not SAT?

@drusba, that’s ACT w/ writing, correct? What if I got a 35/36 on the state mandated ACT (which doesn’t have writing) - would that count for anything?

If a college requires ACT w/writing, you need to submit one with writing. Very few have stated what they will do if you submit one ACT w/writing and a second without. Will they consider the second one without writing because first one satisfies the initial writing requirement? UIUC will consider the second score, Yale will not, others I don’t know and you need to contact to find out.

As to sending ACT and two SAT IIs, that does not add subject scores at Yale, Brown or Penn (and several non-ivies) on any basis because those three accept ACT in lieu of both SAT and SAT IIs. In other words, if you submit ACT and two SAT IIs, the only thing they will consider for admission is the ACT because SAT IIs are part of the SAT package for consideration. As to colleges that require SAT IIs regardless of whether you submit SAT or ACT (the rest of the ivies and many others included), you can submit ACT and two SAT IIs, but that does not answer the question of whether you need to submit all scores including any SATs or other SAT IIs. You need to check the college’s particular rules for any situation. Unfortunately or fortunately the rules that the “all scores” colleges have actually adopted differ from one another and thus there is no uniform answer.
