SAT, TOEFL which is more vital?

I am international.

I've attained 108 on the TOEFL and 2270 on the SAT.

I thought my SAT scores were good enough to stand a chance for applying to MIT, Stanford.

are they not?

International applicants face enormous competition in the MIT and Stanford pool. You’ll really have to have many many outstanding attributes and the ability to pay. Good luck to you

I do not agree with T26E4 on MIT. While in Stanford international applicants are indeed put in an extremely competitive pool which takes under consideration both their outstanding attributes and their ability to pay, In MIT, as I understand, international applicants are put in one pool with domestic students and their ability to pay does not play an factor in the admission (i.e MIT is need-blind).

If you know otherwise, please enlighten me :)

gyk: I think you’ll see that MIT’s international student pool strangely stays about the same year to year yet we know that more internationals are applying. That points to unofficial quotas. And while MIT may be need-blind in admissions, that does not mean that they will meet all the financial needs of students who can not pay. Being admitted but not affording the school = not attending

The TOEFL is a formality. I don’t know why so many internationals stress over it when it’s barely even a factor in admissions (as long as you meet the minimum requirements, of course).

I think the TOEFL is exactly that - a pass/fail.

your sat is kinda low

For MIT the TOEFL can be important for some. An international from a non-English speaking country can submit either the SAT or TOEFL, plus two SAT IIs. If you submit both SAT and TOEFL, MIT will decide whether the TOEFLl should be considered over the SAT (unlikely with your high SAT score but if SAT were low, particularly for sections other than math, TOEFL may be considered if it helps you).

With Stanford, you must submit SAT or ACT but TOEFL is not required but recommended for non-English speaking internationals and should be viewed as a possible helpful factor if your other than math SAT sections are not high; otherwise it will mean little (likely in your case with the high SAT)

Your SAT is within those college’s middle 50% ranges but whether you get admitted depends on a lot of factors other than test scores.

hey,
I suggest you look at the English requirements for international students on the university website. They will give you the minimum TOEFL requirements. Apart from the TOEFL requirements they may say that if you have achieved a minimum score of say 670 on the verbal part of the SAT1 you would not be required to submit the TOEFL score. So I think you should check out the minimum requirements of the universities you are interested in. And there have been students who haven’t obtained great academic scores and have yet been admitted to these universities based on other features such as extra curricular activities and such. Good luck!
