So I’ve been told multiple things about the SAT I vs. the ACT

Some people have told me that the SAT is heavily favored by BA/MD programs, some so much so that they basically have 1500 (old test) standards.

Then again others have told me that for the class of '06 the ACT will be favored as the SAT I is a brand new test.

And still others have said that there is no preference.

What is the reality?

Do BA/MD programs, specifically refferring to the top tier, favor the SAT over the ACT or is there really no preference?

And, why is that most CCers prefer or seem to only discuss the SAT?

P.S. I am from the midwest which seems to have an ACT bias

im not sure, but a ba/md attendee friend of mine said he was rejected because of his not taking the sat-they said he should take the sat and he would have a good shot depending on his score, but he got in elsewhere so he didnt do it.

yeah the midwest has a act bias, but the rest of the usa has a sat bias. they all are used to sats not acts. im from wisconsin and am at this website so i have info from both sides. either way both tests are similer (but different) and it shouldnt matter which you take. id reccomennd taking both just to be safe though.

Hmmm, Thanks.

Anyone else have any simliar SAT over ACT experiences/knowledge for BA/MD programs, or are both equal?

i think its better to take the sats for bs/md programs because many programs don't even list a required act score. That should be a signal that they don't really use/trust the act as much as the sat.

Yea i had a problem like that last year when I was applying to straight-med programs. My SAT scores were high enough to apply for the programs but weren't competitive in my opinion (1500+). So I decided to take the ACT, and to my surprise, all the programs accepted my score.

I think it is true there may be biases towards either test depending on the location of the school, though I don't find it significant. If you have a competitive score on either test and have good GPA / extracurricular activities, you should be granted an interview.

Basically, don't be concerned about turning in SAT vs. ACT scores. They're both universally accepted. I mean, the ACT isn't called the American College Test for nothing.

its not called the american college test, it officially stands for nothing.

one more thing i just have to ask. What!? you got a 1500+ sat and you didnt mention it!!! Again, What!?!?! i guess it doesnt matter because you got in everywhere, but my goodness, that is a phenomenal score even for schools like harvard yale etc. there is no diff between a 750 and a 800

b/c look across these boards, u will see kids with 1200 SAT scors with 29-30 ACT, which is like a 1350. You will see kids with 1350 with 32-33 ACT which are like 1450 SAT. In fact, the ACT does not penalyze for wrong answers and u can take it over and over and over b/c u can only report ur highest score
