What's the best way to improve this? And please forego all of the common sense advice, i.e. take your time, read carefully, study vocabulary, buy a book, all of which I am doing (I got Barron's critical reading book).

Is there any way to approach this? I got a 610 on my first actual SAT in March for the critical reading, and while it might be near impossible, I would really like to raise this to 700 and not have it be lowered on my next test on October.

Just do all of Barron's practice stuff and take time to UNDERSTAND why you got answers right or wrong (yes, review right answers also). This will help you develop reasoning skills and can be VERY helpful. Also, for reading comp, it might help to

Read the question

Locate the material in the passage (for questions with lines references)

PREDICT the answer in your own words (this can help you elimate ambiguities and determine the subtleties in the choices that can be quite obnoxious.)

Then examine the choices.

That's pretty much it. Practice and review all your answers.

And if your having trouble with vocab, memorize some words!
And READ a lot... some high level literature is always helpful.

It's also not anywhere near impossible to raise that much. It's actually not as hard as you might think. After some practice, you'll get the hang of it.
