How low can you go on your scores with the SAT and still be safe? The scholarship people told me to send them my SAT scores by December to verify my PSAT scores. I got a 233 on the PSAT. Does that mean I have to get around a 2300 on the SAT or what? I took the SAT in March and got a 2080 so I'm planning on retaking it October, and I just want to know what I should be expecting of myself.

You don’t have to get a 233. I think it is around 1980 or 2000. I do know that reading all the CC posts has provided a wealth of information to our family.

Your 2080 is high enough…but feel free to retest.

When you retest in October, have your SAT scores sent to NMCorp #0085

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but I’m confused about the next step for the NMS. My son got his letter back in January for his PSAT. He replied or did whatever they needed him to do. He took the SAT I in December. Now what do we do? I thought we were waiting until they officially notify him that he’s a semi-finalist-September maybe??-and then he needs to send his SAT scores, fill in the application for finalist, write essays and then wait until spring. Is that how it works or is he supposed to be doing something now?

Thanks for helping a clueless mom.

Hi,

Around September, if your child becomes a NMSF his school will give him a packet to complete. There are instructions inside. Follow them closely. Review whatever your child does with the packet before it is returned to the school (before the school’s deadline).

If your child becomes a NMSF, you will have to send his SAT scores to NMCorp…code #0085

As long as your child’s GPA is good (no bad grades), he’s not a discipline problem at school, he fill out the paperwork correctly, the school does its part and sends the paperwork in…and you send SAT scores to NMCorp, then your child will make NMF in February.

Ok, thank-you so much! We’re homeschoolers so they’ll send it directly to me like they did with the PSAT.

^make sure he sends his sat score to national merit corporation (as he would to colleges)

But he won’t do that until he’s notified in September, correct?

We sent S’s scores to NMC in January when he took the SAT, as we knew at that point that his PSAT would be NMSF qualifying. So, you can send the scores at any time, regardless of notification (unless however he’s on the cutoff line, then I’d wait for official notification).

Oh, I didn’t realize that we could do it that early! My son took the SAT in December. Yes, his PSAT scores will qualify him for NMSF. So, do I just go to the college board website and select NMS as the recipient (code 0085)?

^yes
