SAT vocab help

It is looking like my son will not make nearly the high score he did on the ACT in December. His composite on the ACT was 34. He made a 35 in reading. He will be taking the SAT in March. He has been making around 600 on the practice tests on the critical reading section. Nearly all of the questions he is missing are on vocabulary. Is there that big of a difference between the vocab on the ACT and the SAT?? He has been reading Direct Hits. But on this last section, he didn't know 6 out of the 8 words on it... How should I help him between now and March 10th?

I used The Essential 300 Words + Barron’s list of High Frequency Words and got all the sentence completions right.

There really isn’t anything that he can do besides memorize loads of vocabulary words. I guess it could help if he read magazines/books with higher vocabulary levels such as Time.

Yeah…we homeschool and he has read a ton of great literature… One semester he read the entire works of CS Lewis in addition to his regular English curriculum. But as I have started going through the Direct hits and the 300 book, he doesn’t know 90 percent of the words… How in the world can he read these books and discuss them with me and not understand the vocabulary??? I’m working with him daily with the vocabulary now… We’ll see if it is enough…

Try the ACT section.

If you are looking for online practice I like membean - it shows interrelationships between word families and roots. It also uses a variety of media - text, pics, videos, podcasts to teach words as well.
