SAT Vocabulary Study Thread

<p>This thread has probably been done many times before, but it seemed like a good idea to start a new one, now school's starting again!</p>

<p>The idea:</p>

<p>-I type a SAT vocabulary word, </p>

<p>-The next poster gives the definition of the word, the word used in a sentence,
and comes up with a new word. </p>

<p>Example: </p>

<p>Expunge</p>

<p>** Expunge: Obliterate, Eradicate --> The minor felony was expunged from his permanent record. **</p>

<p>Okay, </p>

<p>First word: ** Extraneous **</p>

<p>extra or unnecessary</p>

<p>A lot of information in history textbooks is extraneous.</p>

<p>New Word: impugn</p>

<p>To oppose, attack (with words), call in question </p>

<p>He impugned the credibility of his opponents arguments. </p>

<p>New word: </p>

<p>Debilitate</p>

<p>To weaken</p>

<p>The golfer was debilitated after a full day of playing golf.</p>

<p>New Word: Finesse</p>

<p>refinement, diplomacy, tacfullness, subtlety… </p>

<p>According to the critics, his new book lacked the subtlety and finesse of his prior work. </p>

<p>Incapacitate</p>

<p>Debilitate:to weaken
The non-stopping ten-hour laborious work debilitated the poor man who was already suffering from malnutrition.</p>

<p>New word:ubiquitous</p>

<p>existing or being everywhere at the same time, widespread</p>

<p>Coca Cola is ubiquitous because it is found in nearly every country.</p>

<p>New Word: blowhard</p>

<p>blowhard: boaster [person who boasts]</p>

<p>The kid is a blowhard since he always brags about his high grades.</p>

<p>Next Word: sanctimonious</p>

<p>sanctimonious: devout, pious</p>

<p>The priest’s sanctimonious remarks were no surprise to church members.</p>

<p>Fleeting: shortlived</p>

<p>The happy, super-silly goldfish with huge watch-laden textbooks had the fleeting belief of passers-by.</p>

<p>Word: Recalcitrant</p>

<p>recalcitrant: stubborn</p>

<p>The recalcitrant scholar was steadfast in his belief that there was such a thing as magic in the world.</p>
