SAT vs. ACT

Which do colleges prefer? Also, if i had a 28 composite on ACT(Reading-35 English-32 Math-24 Science-22) and a 191 on PSAT, what should I score on SAT and would that be a decent score?

depends on what colleges you are looking at...are you looking at HYPS?

ACT is best for few midwest/southern schools. The SAT is much more widely accepted.

You should be able to score around the equivalent of your PSAT score without practicing.

I' looking mainly at the U of Washingtin at Seattle, but I'm going to apply to NYU for the heck of it

The great majority of schools take either test. Check with potential schools, of course, but if they take either, go with the one you score better on.

The idea of a preference is a historical artifact. There used to be areas of the country where colleges just took one or the other. But this is untrue today. But people keep taking what people traditionally took in their geographic region. See, e.g., http://www.math.com/students/kaplan/satoract.html

We live in an SAT area. My daughter liked and did better on the ACT. She checked and saw that all her potential colleges take it. So she went with that and is currently at an Ivy.

You can google and find the SAT ACT conversion chart. This would show you what someone with your ACT on average would get on the SAT. But you might score higher or lower. Again, take a practice test and see.
