SAT vs. ACT

I was just looking at the Brown admissions webpage and read that they require either the SAT I & 2 SAT reasoning tests or the ACT… any thoughts on which option is better? If I think I’ll do much better on the ACT is that the way to go? If I take both the SAT I and ACT will Brown look at both or just the scores I submit?

I think that the ACT is a fundamentally better test, as it is a measure of your achievement rather than your "aptitude", which the SAT is supposed to be a measure of. I have taken both, and I liked the ACT better. The good thing with ACT is that if you take it more than once, the ACT corporation will let you choose which of the scores you send to colleges. If you submit the SAT, you automatically submit the scores from every test you have taken, including both SAT I and any subject tests. Certainly it is more convenient to just take one test (the ACT w/ writing) rather than the gigantic SAT plus two one-hour subject tests.

To sum it all up, I would advise that you take the SAT and two subject tests that you feel confident with, as well as the ACT with writing option. That way, you could choose to send whichever scores are better. Regarding your last question, the school will only see the test score that you choose to submit (SAT or ACT), unless of course you submit both.

If you do better on one test, then that is clearly the way to go.
