SAT vs ACT

I have ben told that some northeast college counselors in private schools and those that are hired and paid mega bucks are telling their students not to take the ACT. They claim that colleges consider the ACT to be easier and therefore not the best road to take for admissions into highly selective colleges. Where I live, in the south, we take both and I've never heard that the SAT is a "better" test.

Comments please

I live in the Midwest; here the ACT is emphasized, but I was looking for out east schools and they all want the SAT. I've always thought of the ACT as easier, and most people's scores reflect that - I've never heard of someone doing better on the SAT. And personally, I'm a lot prouder of my SAT (1510) than my ACT (35), even though techinically the ACT is "better"

Basically, the theory of "not" taking the ACT makes no sense to me. Since all of the most selective colleges require SAT II's, the colleges will see all the SAT I scores. However, if you take the ACT you don't have to report the score to any colleges unless you want to. So what is the harm? You take and must report SAT and hold back ACT if scores are not good. If ACT scores are great just have them fowarded to the colleges.

Does this seem reasonable?

College counsellors tell their students not to take the ACT exclusively just because the SAT is more widely accepted and more "respectable" in a sense.
