Since the SAT seems to be so much more popular than the ACT, do colleges prefer SAT scores, or is there truly no bias?

No. Generally on the east coast they prefer ACT (that's what I've heard), but it doesn't matter. Just take one and submit the test that you would do better on.

The SAT is the dominate test on both the east and west coasts, the ACT dominates in the middle of the country. A number of years ago schools on the coasts wanted the SAT and schools in the middle states wanted the ACT. However, I think there are only a couple of schools that demand one or the other. It really doesn't matter any more. Take both and submit either or both, depending on how you feel the scores reflect you.

There truly is no bias unless the particular institution notes otherwise. Personally, I prefer taking SAT I and two SAT II's over the ACT. But you can whichever way.
