SAT vs SAT Subject tests

With respect to Ivy league admissions how much can a 2400 on the SAT Subject tests ( US History, Physics, Math Level II ) offset a 2030 on the SAT.

Does this matter to colleges ( Ivy leagues and other top LACs ) - I am international student who hasn't studied US History ever before but still I get a 800 on USH. Will this help in any way ??

First, for most a “2400” total in three subject tests won’t offset anything because most use the highest two subject tests if you submit more than two and thus having a third does not add anything. Even then the issue is not one of offset when they are doing a full file review. The high subject test scores are definite plus while the lower SAT is still a lower SAT.

Wow! It’s impressive that you got an 800 on the USH as an international student. A 2400 on subject tests will probably make a large difference on the academic side of admission, but schools like Ivy Leagues get plenty of 4.0 2400 type applicants that they reject. Your score will help your academics part of admissions, the rest is up to ECs, essays, recs, etc.

Thanks, a positive and a negative let’s see what happens.

By the way which is more highly regarded SAT Subject tests or SAT.

1600 SAT II is " more positive " or 2030 SAT is " more negative "

@Laeven - I know how important the ECs, Recs and Essays are. Could you please look at the my chance me thread and tell me if my overall profile is good ( Ivy league standard )

In general the SAT I (regular SAT) is more highly regarded. A lot of schools dont even require SAT IIs.

I know most schools don’t require SAT II. I am talking about the top schools which require SAT II. Is SAT Maths more highly regarded than SAT II Maths IIC ?

I think the regular SAT is generally going to outweigh SAT subject tests as a factor in admission. Your high subject tests scores will certainly help, but will not replace a lower SAT score.

Aren’t the SAT subject tests more difficult ??

SAT II math is usually considered more difficult than the SAT math. However, because it is more difficult its also easier to ace (you’re allowed to miss some questions and still get a perfect 800).

Also, a lot of top schools don’t require SAT IIs. ACT with writing is usually acceptable too. If I were you I’d take try it out.

SAT II subject tests will be used to compare your abilities within certain fields of study. Although most colleges require 2 SAT subject tests, scoring 800 on more than 2 can actually be a bonus. It shows that you’re multi-talented in different academic fields.

However, this won’t change the fact that you scored a 2030 on your SAT. SAT II and SAT do not offset each other as they measure different aspects of an applicant.
