SAT with 2 Subject Tests OR (?) ACT with Writing

Is the option of sending just the ACT with writing in the place of the SAT and the two subject tests a real option? Or is it more like the “optional essays” where, in reality, you have to write them to be considered?
Asking because I got a good ACT score but was disappointed by the subject test score for the area that I plan to major in

It depends on the school! Some schools that want subject tests will accept the ACT + writing in place of SAT IIs (e.g. Brown)
Here’s a handy link for several schools:

Are there any particular schools that you’re wondering about?

It depends on each school, but usually, elite institutions recommend ACT with writing WITH two additional SAT IIs.

Thanks for the speedy response!
So if they say that they accept ACT + Writing in the place of SAT IIs it won’t hurt my chances to not send SAT IIs? I just wasn’t sure if subject tests were one of those “not required but still required” type of situations even with ACTs.

Also, since I am applying as a premed (most likely bio major), would it make more sense to send my highest two scores or my major related scores. I got 800 Math II, 760 US History, and 720 Bio M. I know 720 isn’t anything to loose sleep over, but it is below the typical range (especially seen on here) and since bio is what I plan to major in it seems uncomfortably low in comparison.

@viphan On the Duke website, for example, it says
“All candidates for admission must complete one of the following standardized testing options: the test of the ACT, including the writing exam or the College Board SAT, plus two SAT Subject Tests. Duke requires that students send their full testing record for either the ACT or SAT and SAT Subject exams taken in high school.”
Do you recommend sending two subject tests in addition to the ACT with writing even though it says one or the other?

I would definitely send the 800 and the 760! Even if the school doesn’t require them if you send the ACT, sending your high scores could help you( or not, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt to send your high scores). Like you said, a 720 is a great score but since you have two higher scores I would send those.

However, some schools (ex: Yale) want all your subject test scores, so if you apply there you have to send all three! Either way, I don’t think a 720 would ever be the reason you get rejected because that’s still a good score. Good luck!

@CDOESenior2k16 so it wouldn’t seem weird if I submitted scores outside my intended major?
Thank you so much for your advice!

I can’t really speak for the admissions officers but I don’t think it would be a huge deal! It seems like you’re science/math oriented, and you have a strong math score. Even though you don’t want to major in history, there’s nothing wrong with submitting a history score- if anything I would think that would make you seem more versatile! They don’t want biology majors who aren’t interested in anything but science- that would be pretty boring. Good luck!

OP:

Yes, you should send all three SAT II scores.
