I want to apply to Stanford, which requires all SAT and SAT 2 scores to be sent. However, I have a bad score on my record. I will be taking SAT Physics, and Math 2. I just got my SAT World History score and it was a 540! Should I retake World History, or should I just do my best in Physics and Math 2 and just hope Stanford will not take the world history into too much consideration?

Retake it, please. Not to be mean, but that’s a little too low. At least take it again for a 650+.

Or you can leave it and take another one -

Take a different subject test to add on to my Physics and Math2, or retake World History?

I suggest taking another test - a 540 to a 650+ is not very likely.

I figure if I at least got a 700 on the retake for World History, it will offset the 540 I just recently received? Will the 540 hurt my application regardless if I do well on the retake? I need some perspective, so please help.

can’t you use a score choice?

is it very hard to get good score for WH?
how long do you guys usually spend on this WH to get >700? Like 3 months, 4 months or what?
for one who doesn’t know anything about history but with intensive, let say, 3 months of studying, is it possible to get >700?

I took history before and have some knowledge about this subject (general stuff about WW1, WW2, Cold War, Berlin Wall, Chinese Revolution, Collapse of Soviet Union…) I dont know whether it’s enough for SAT WH???

World History AP class is the best preparation. Just for some background, I got 800 on the recent June 6th test. The subject test is very, very specific, with a couple of questions with material not even covered in our AP book.

My biggest suggestion would be to read the Barron’s World History AP prep book a couple of times. It’s way too specific for the AP but perfect for the SATII.

Stanford does not participate in score choice. The OP would have to retake, or preferably [and probably more practical] would be to take another subject test.

For bob64, yes, I took the AP World History, and I was a fool to assume taking the class will get me at a 700+ on the SAT IIs. I should’ve studied the actual SAT II World History book because of all the specifics AP overlooks. Thank you for the suggestion though.

gagingang, unfortunately, I am not at all ready for any of the other SAT IIs. I do however think if I actually studied for the SAT II World History, I would do a lot better. Because Stanford doesn’t participate in score choice, I was hoping if I retook the World History SATs, it would offset the 540 I got in June.

hey is 700 + a good enough score for stanford?

yes, although you should probably aim for +750 to be really competitive.

Barrons AP WH is the way to go. Don’t know any other way to say it, but a 540 won’t cut it at Stanford.

SATII WH, you have to know a lot about China and India as well as Europe. You need to study hard for it.

You should take a different SAT II and just be honest - tell the Admissions Committee that you did not study for it, then highlight the SAT IIs that you did study for.

Also, UC-Irvine is a really nice place – think about it.

I have been getting some objective feedback from my mentors and the consensus was: a 540 on SAT II WH will not help me, but it will not hurt me substantially. I have decided, I will better spend my time drafting my college essays and preping for my other SAT IIs, and after I take care of that, I can then consider about preparing for the SAT WH.

College Essays are more influential in applications than SAT IIs. What do you all feel about this?
