I've taken the SATs twice, and I'm happy with my CR + M scores. My writing, however, isn't as good. I've been told writing isn't weighed as heavily, and having good CR + M scores is more important. I do believe that to an extent, but when I look at the middle 50s of competitive colleges, writing scores top the other two sections by 20 points. Do top colleges weigh writing the same, if not, more?

It differs from college to college, but to see how each school uses the writing score, you can check collegeboard.

colleges such as georgetown, vanderbilt, and uchicago(i think) don’t consider the writing score and go by the old scoring out of 1800. it’s common if a section on the sat is just NOT YOUR THING.

but it couldnt hurt to improve your score to appear wellrounded

^ 1600? It depends on the school - some schools (I think Reed is one) say they weigh it like a subject test, while others (University of Chicago, etc) don’t use it at all, while still others considered it fairly equal to the CR and Math sections.
