SAT Writing Enquiry

BB p622.

Computers compiling statistics for scientists have supplied a deluge of information, and it has changed the way that research is conducted.

(A) a deluge of information, and it has
(B) a great deal of information, and that is
(C) so much information; it is, therefore
(D) so much information that they have
(E) so much information, which they have been

Why is the answer D? I know the other answers can be easily eliminated because they clearly are grammatically incorrect, but isn't the "they" in D ambiguous? "They" could also refer to the scientists or computers?

Computers [compiling statistics for scientists] have supplied a deluge of information, and it has changed the way that research is conducted.

First of all, I’ve noticed a pattern after taking many practice tests: so is coupled with that. Second, they is referring back to the computers. You may confuse they with scientists; however, as shown in the brackets above, scientists is actually used to clarify which kind of computers is supplying a deluge of information. Therefore they is referring back to the computers although the pronoun may seem ambiguous.

benhpark is correct. You might think the “they” is ambiguous, but in in reality, it is crystal-clear and referring back to the “Computers”. The word “Computers” is obviously plural and hence “they have” is the correct usage. D is the right answer.

To add to what has already been said:

“Computers” is the noun providing information that changes research. “For scientists” describes “computers” by specifying who those computers benefit.
