ASSIGNMENT: are people motivated to achieve by personal satisfaction rather than by money or fame?

It’s undeniable that money and frame is tempting and capable of motivating people in short-term. However, what can truly actuate people to devote their lives to causes is personal satisfaction. Only personal satisfaction can lead to enthusiastic hard-working and huge accomplishment in the long-term. Differ from fame, personal satisfaction guarantees that people are steadfast about their goals and are willing to scarify to achieve them just like examples of Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela devoting their lives to their careers and dreams to help others. Money cannot stimulate personal satisfaction but fulfilling personal satisfaction at work can eventually bring fame and money. Thus, I believe personal satisfaction is better motivation.

Mother Teresa, who founded the Missionaries of Charity, was internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocated for the poor and helpless. As winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa dedicated the majority of her life to help the poorest of the poor in India neither motivate by fame or money, Mother Teresa. In 1946, Mother Teresa experienced what she later described as “the call within the call” while traveling to the Loreto convent. Without any incentive, Mother Teresa decided to help the poor while living within them. As Mother Teresa said herself: “it was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith.” Neither motivate by money nor fame, Mother Teresa founded and organized the Missionaries or Charity and made it one of the most famous group within fifty years. All these achieved because Mother Teresa regarded helping others as her personal satisfaction. From Mother Teresa, we see that personal satisfaction is more powerful than money and fame because it is from within a person and can help the person overcome difficulties. Similar to Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, the South African black political leader and former president, dedicated himself to the fight against racial oppression.

Although Nelson Mandela was awarded 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to antiracism and antiapartheid, he encountered tremendous difficulties while leading South Africa’s antiapartheid movement. As the first black South African to hold the office, he was disapproved by officers due to their misunderstanding of his personality. Nevertheless, he embraced them with kindness and eventually revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality. As one of the greatest moral and political leaders of our time, Nelson Mandela regarded antiracism movement as his lifelong goal and advocated for support among people. Compare to money and fame, personal satisfaction is likely to be the incentive of Nelson Mandela’s hard work as he said before, “I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself.” Personal satisfaction motivated him to work hard and pursue fearless even though innumerous obstacles lying ahead. No one can stop a person if that person is pursuing a lifelong personal goal.

In conclusion, personal satisfaction carries more weight than money and fame when motivated a person to achieve a goal.
