SAT Writing Question

By the end of 1945, Alice, thirty years old but already <an expert="" in="" the="" field="" of="" family="" dynamics,="" had="" begun="" writing=""> her memoirs.</an>

A. same
C. <as an="" expert="" in="" the="" field="" of="" family="" dynamics,="" began="" to="" write=""></as>

Is it A because "as an expert" is just kinda weird? or is this question testing the present perfect vs past? Can't you use both?

bumpppppppp

No, this has nothing to do with tenses. I’d pick A just because C sounds really awkward. The phrase set off by the commas modifies the noun Alice. Imagine saying, “Alice is thirty years old” - sounds good. “But Alice is already an expert…” - also good. However, “Alice is as an expert” just doesn’t work. I’m sure there’s a more correct way to explain the answer, but that’s just how I would approach it.

A is correct

Thanks I realized you could use both present perfect and past tense for the sentence, it doesn’t matter
