SAT Writing question

Here is a sentence correction problem from McGraw-Hill's SAT book:

Generally regarded as the most influential social science treatise of the 20th century, [John Maynard Keynes wrote a book, "The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money" that] forever changed the way scientists looked at the economy.

C) [John Maynard Keynes' book "The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money had already]

E) [John Maynard Keynes' book "The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money]

I narrowed the question down to two choices, of which I think one of them is obviously the correct answer. However, the answer the books states otherwise...

It's E because adding "had already" before "forever" is superfluous in the case of D because the everlasting influence of Keynes' work is already stated quite explicitly.

I agree.

The option 'C' introduces a new type of past tense with the phrase 'had already', and this contradicts with the tense established by the word 'regarded'.

obviously E for two reasons, both of them stated above already...
