Sat writing question

(Uncertain how to proceed with the scene, the actors stopped, awaiting for) further instructions from the director.
A) Uncertain how to proceed with the scene, the actors stopped awaiting for
B) The actors, uncertain how to proceed with the scene, they stopped to await
C) Because they were uncertain how to proceed with the scene, the actors stopped and awaited
D) Uncertainty about how to proceed with the scene stopped the actors to await
E) In their uncertainty about how to proceed with the scene, the actors stopped and await for

Right off the bat, I knew B, D, and E were no good. It was down to A and C. (C) didn't make sense to me because of the inclusion of the "and", which indicated that the actors "stopped...instructions" and "the actors...awaited instructions." The former didn't make sense to me, so i canceled off choice (C), picking (A). However, (C) is the correct choice. Why?

It’s idiomatic; the preposition “for” is unnecessary when “awaiting” is used. The original sentence would work if “for” was eliminated, or if “awaiting” was replaced with “waiting” (…waiting for further instructions).

In choice C, the actors did two separate things: they “stopped”, and they “awaited further instructions”. They didn’t stop instructions.
