SAT Writing section

So I took the SAT in May and got a 700 writing. My essay was good (12), but my MC stuff was only a 64.

If I take it again, and my MC score goes up, but my essay drops to an 11 or a 10 or something, do they take your best essay and your best multiple choice, or just your best overall?

I think they take the overall score.

Unfortunately they take the best overall score for each section.

if your MC goes up your overall score should also go up, unless your essay drops a lot. 2-3 points shouldn't make a big difference.

How do you score a 12 in the essay? I've seen CCers comment that if you fill up 2 pages of decent esssay words, then you're pretty much guarantted at least a 10. That true?

It's not true. I wrote well (got an above average score) and filled up both pages and got a 9.

I filled both pages, and while it might not have been the greatest writing, it had decent essay words and got an 8.

Oh, I only filled up one page and maybe a third of the second page and I got a 9. And here I was feeling all sad because I thought I could have gotten a better score if I had filled it all the way. XD

It's definitely more important to do well on MC than Essay.

I got 1 wrong on the MC (80) which is ~70% of your score, and a 9 on the Essay, ~30% of your score, and somehow got an 800.

PS; I wrote 1 1/2 pages for the Essay.
I don't really think length plays much of a role.. Although I'm sure essays that get 12's almost always fill both pages, since they're full of detailed examples and nice language and all that.

My friend and I each got a 69 for MC scores. I got a 12 on my essay, he got a 10. I ended up 40 points higher with a 740. If you drop a few points in your essay... it might make a somewhat significant difference. Depends on the score you're aiming for.

I filled both pages. I took it in May, when the prompt was on the group victory/personal preference.

I supported my thesis with both a personal example and a larger-scale example (US women's gymnastics team from the 2004 Olympics).

Taking AP English and writing about 30 or 40 AP prompts over the course of the year probably helped. I had a really anal-retentive teacher.
