SAT - Writing Section?

I'm a little confused about Yale in regard to "counting" the writing section. I've heard both - that they disregard it to some extend AND that they pay a lot of attention to it. I plan to retake the SAT because of the horrendous job I did on the Writing section, but I was curious about this. I've seen some college books (from recent years) where Yale still quotes its mid-50% SAT on the 1600 scale... But I'm not sure?

Without the Writing section, I have a 1470 - while not super impressive for this board, I don't consider this a terrible score. Again, I will retake. I was just curious.

They count it just the same. They won’t disregard it so it’s a good thing you’re retaking if you feel that yours is too low.

According to the Yale Common Data Set, Yale uses the essay component of the ACT/SAT Writing Section for admissions purposes. How much weight the essay receives is an open question. http://www.yale.edu/oir/cds.pdf

If you and another applicant are virtually the same everywhere else, the writing section will definitely matter and even if your not, it matters because Yale is looking for students who are good writers as this is a major part of the curriculum.

The writing section certainly matters at Yale, though it doesn’t carry as much weight as CR or math… On the other hand, Yale doesn’t disregard the writing section entirely, as some schools do - I know of Georgetown and Cornell off the top of my head that do this.

If you have a 1470 CR+M and a “horrendous” writing score, you need to get your SAT up for Yale…
