issit true tt many top schools dont care about the new writing section? if that's the case, then what's the point of adding it in?

Many top schools are giving the SAT I Writing equal weight to the Math and CR sections this year, though, as you said, some are not. I imagine the colleges that don't use the Writing scores this year will use them next year.

I don't know but I believe that the SAT was modified because the UCs were upset. Maybe some schools didn't agree with the UCs or maybe they just want to see how accurate the scores are.

Some schools may want to validate the new section as a predictor of academic success. They know there's a correlation (albeit a weak one) between SAT math and verbal scores and college GPA; some may take the cautious approach and collect the data to measure the correlation in the writing section.

schools that dont/use writing section

backfire, you are my hero =D

i'm surprised yale says its giving the writing section no weight...

but it would look bad if one got a 200 in writing and 800 on the other 2 sections. just a thought....

but remember, they still SEE the score. it doesnt just magically go away. they may look at your SAT essay if your college essays are amazing and your grades/writing score are/is poor. but thats about it

wow!! thanks! just what I wanted!

THe point of the SAT Writing essay section is to compare with a person's college essays. Some cheating students get help on college essays; a student with splendid college application essays but horrible SAT writing might indicate that the essays were not written by the student applying.

or it might indicate that that person can't write a decent essay in 25 minutes

For the most part top schools will be giving the writing section at least as much weight as an SAT2. Most schools that lowered their SAT2 requirement from 3 exams to two did so because they planned to treat the SAT writing section as an SAT2.
