hi everyone.are followings right or wrong? 1. sat grammer section; “where” refers only physical location. 2.“in which” refers non physical location. but what about “on which” ?. can it refer physical location ?. i got one question wrong. the bikini, invented forty years ago, derived its name from the tiny pacific atoll (on which) the united states conducted early nuclear tests. (No error) i thought that atoll is physical locaton , so it should be where. But i was wrong. answer was NO ERROR.
Yes, “[preposition] which” is a replacement for “where” or “when” in cases that aren’t about physical locations or chronological times, but they can also refer to physical locations or chronological times:
The couch on which my cat reclined is made of pure pleather.
The university from which Oxford St. has borrowed its name is renowned worldwide.
The restaurant to which I invited my friends turned out to be closed.
The tunnel through which I drove was carved out of pure granite.
The hill over which I pedaled my tricycle afforded a lovely view.
I loved the part of the movie in which the hero ate a sandwich.
My favorite part of the class was the lecture, during which I took a refreshing nap.
The hardest part of high school is final exam season, during which many students suffer from sleep deprivation.
etc.
Basically, you will never have to replace a “[prep] which” construction with a “where” or “when” construction on the SAT, but you may have to perform the reverse operation.
