SAT Writing

It's sorta irrelevent to me now that I've done with UofC's app..but yeah I always wanted to know whether UofC looks at the writing portion of SAT. I visited their website to check 2012 profile and classes b4 that, they always seem to omit the writing portion. I found this link from Kaplan KAPLAN EXCLUSIVE: New SAT Scoring Policies from 374 Top Schools
The link is basically a list of schools and their stances regarding SAT. This list is sorta old, and Uof C is still listed as undecided...WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Does anyone have a reliable source?

Wow, that is a fantastic link! Thanks =)

lolz xD
wow I just went over my post again, so many grammar mistakes = =+ please excuse them~
But yeah, does anyone know whether U Chicago looks at SAT Writing ?

according to the college board website, they don't use it

nope....UChicago considers a 25-minute essay an unsatisfactory way to show one's writing ability... and this is also the reason why UChi puts emphasis on its unique supplementary essay...

thanks so much, u guys are awesome =D

maybe this is just me being bitter because my writing score was my highest, but wouldnt a 25-minute writing session separate the students that can think quickly on their feet?

I mean, if you give anybody a week to write an essay, everyone's will be pretty good, but if you put them in a tight situation, dont you find out who the thinkers are?

just my 2cents

That Kaplan link says "New", but I think it's been around for two or three years.Note, to the right on the same page it says

"Get tools and tips for the college admissions process!
Welcome Classes of 2010—and 2011
Special resources to get the Classes of '10 and '11 started in the admissions process."

The admissions counselors, this year at least under O'Neill, do not even see the writing score. It is removed from the score report.

Biogoal, some of your points are relevant. I am a talented writer and always have been, but I hate timed essays. I can write something up, and often it's even decent, but I feel completely flustered. I don't get to take the time I normally would for planning, and the conclusion can often be a bit short/blunt. When given a week, I have no one to blame but myself if the writing ends up crappy. Given 25 minutes, I'm just not as confident.

All that aside, I took the ACT plus writing for NU, and I remember reading that it would not be considered for Chicago. I would assume the SAT plus writing would fall into that same spot.

biogoal, but once you leave college, how often are you going to have only 25 minutes to write an essay? If you're publishing something, you're going to have time to sit down and write it. school is the only place i've ever seen where you have timed essays.

Not out of college, and not Univ. of Chicago, but recently my daughter was given last minute assignment to write a review of a theatre performance for the school paper. Not her best work, but well done in 20 minutes, and made the deadline about an hour after the certain went down.

RhymesWithGreen~ totally agree with ur point~~~~~ though i have a much higher score on SATwriting than CR

I actually love timed writes - i've done much more in my high school career than ones that aren't timed.

I can be a bit of a procrastinator sometimes...and it's nice to have timed writes where everyone has the SAME amount of time to finish the essay.

I also like the way I write when it's timed...I go straight to the point and don't BS.

I think it's kind of like two separate issues - how you write under a time crunch/address the prompt (generally these aren't creative writes anyway) and how good your creative writing/fluency is when you have all the time in the world.
