How important is the SAT I score in admissions? Is a 1420 good enough? Does the SAT take priority over the essay? thanks

Will we ever know who shot Kennedy? How about them UFOs? What was the best thing before sliced bread was invented? :P

lol .

anyone ?

important, but if you have everything else and lackluster SATs still have decent chance

Agree with Dan, but essays are crucial.

I think a 1420 is just about on the bubble at Amherst. They avg. about
710 M, 720 V. I still say, fwiw, Amherst is going to look seriously at the WR section of SAT I. These LAC's want good writers, and people tend to only write about M and CR. For a score of 1420, the essay will be crucial. Also, how did you do on the SAT II's? They could help offset the 1420 if they were really good.

on the SAT II's i got: 730 Writing, 710 Literature, 730 Math IC
i am considering applying for transfer (currently at uc berkeley), so, at the time I took the SAT I, there was no writing section.

Why are you transfering from Berkeley?

I read somewhere on another post that last year's Amherst freshman class was larger than they anticipated. Could be a problem for transfers.

tooo big, impersonal, bureaucratic, plus i'm out of state and the costs keep escalating because uc has a horrible budget crisis. plus, i want to become a writer and i feel i could benefit from a more personal atmosphere. i guess maybe amherst isn't such a good idea though since they take so few transfers. that really stinks.

I think that in general, LAC's have a much better environment for writers and would-be writers. Off the top of my head, I would check out places like Grinnell, Oberlin, Middlebury, Kenyon, maybe Vassar.

Pinkearmufs, what made you choose UC Berkeley in the first place?

your sat stats are a little off, bjm8

for the class of 2008 (2009 will probably be higher when the stats are released) : V 722 M 721

i chose it because of its strong english department.

Okay, makes sense, I guess.

Note to other students: good English department does not necessarily = good Writing department.

thedad - do you think it's worth it for me to apply to amherst?

PinkEarmufs, it's certainly worth it; what's not certain is whether or not you will get in. There's too little experience on these boards to get a refined sense about transfers students, imo...one or two data points can have so many variables implicitly attached as to make them worthless. Actually, I think people are too quick to make hard judgments one way or the other but that's a different matter.

From what I sense from your posts, I would have been hesitant to recommend Berkeley in the first place and Amherst would have made the first cut list. Note that while none of my opinions are Gospel in the first place, this one may be more suspect than most.

As a transfer student, I would think your grades at Berkeley would be of paramount importance, as well as recs from your profs there.
