We just got November SAT score and D got 2300 (780CR, 750M and 770W). She made one mistake on math section that resulted in 50 points deduction. This is her first time taking SAT. Should we stop and this point or try to raise her math score? This is her first time taking this test.

I would not retake the SAT I to try to get the perfect math score. Instead, I would focus on doing well on Math SAT II. The scoring is more forgiving with the number of problems you can miss and still get an 800.

Thank you.

If you have other questions, please feel free to ask. I have two, one a junior and the other a freshman in college, so can share what I’ve learned along the way.

Thank you so much @Coll1TBD . And congratulations to you and both of your kids for lending into such a fine school. My concern with her 750 in math is also based on her not being a math kid with math Olympiads, AMC, etc. under her belt. She is just a normal smart geeky kid with test scores, grades and EC that might or might not be good enough for Caltech. I know a 2400 kid that got rejected from Caltech last year and eventually ended up in Harvard. That kid was a math geek and had grades, EC and everything that a perfect candidate to any top school should have, and yet was rejected from number of school he applied to .

Please share your valuable experience that you learned along the way so it can help us and the other kids who will read this post later
