Do we send ALL scores to the UC system and the Cal states ?
Or do we choose the highest and then send it ??
UC’s require you to provide all SAT test scores that you have, but to determine admission, they use that test with highest composite and do not hold the tests with the lower composites against you. CSU’s allow you to send whatever SAT tests you want to send but they superscore SAT tests, meaning to determine admission when you submit more than one SAT test, they use the highest section scores from the multiple tests and do not hold the lower scores against you, so generally it can be to your advantage to submit all scores
I just spoke with UCLA admissions. They adamantly said you only need to send the highest ACT score. They said the same applies to SAT but that college board will often send them all. But you do not need to send them all. They acknowledged that may not be clear on the web site. Feel free to call them to verify, they are only open from 1-4 PST and closed tomorrow for Veterans day.
That would be an interesting change if the person you contacted can be believed. Go here to the UC site page discussing required tests for admission and see the following which seems to be quite clear about SAT scores http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/examination-requirement/index.html:
“In the College Board’s Score Choice module, ensure that all scores are sent to UC. We require all scores and will use the highest scores from a single administration.”
In the past those who have contacted admissions have learned that the the all scores rule does not apply to either ACT or SAT subject tests but you are the first that has reported being told there is no all scores rule even for SAT’s. I would be wary of the oral information you were given unless you get it in writing as to the SAT because the information you have is directly contradicted by the UC’s site information.
I completely agree with the discord between website and admissions. I asked for a supervisor (to avoid the college student working there) and she acknowledged what the web site says, but explained it as being in regard to how collegeboard will send all scores…but they don’t need or want them all (which makes sense since they only take the highest and get 100K applications). I had two admitted there, and we always just sent the highest. If uncomfortable, please call and ask yourself, or send all the SATs if it makes you feel better. I wouldn’t believe someone on the internet either.
@CADREAMIN You are wrong and unknowingly are misleading people here! If it worked for your kids it does not mean you did it right!
I am not trying to mislead, just repeating what I learned when I spoke with UCLA admissions and invite everyone to do their own research or just send all the scores and not worry about it. I have gotten incorrect direction on this site on other matters and always back it up by dealing directly with the school. I encourage everyone to do that.
fwiw, we were told the same in regard to ACT tests (which is all mine took, no SAT) for UCs. This was when on tour there at an admissions meeting. They only want the highest, so I saved $ and didn’t send them. To each their own…
@drusba thank you. Do you know whether we have to send (if this is correct) ALL SAT AND ACT scores or just one?
Because I took the SAT three times and the ACT two times. However, you can clearly see that I am better in SAT. So would it be ok to send only (-again if this is correct- all ) SAT scores ? Or would I also have to send ACT scores ?
@uclaparent9 I don’t know how current your info is, or perhaps you are just looking at the web page that hasn’t been updated for a long time, but the UC rep came to my kid’s school about a month ago and told students to send in just the highest ACT and/or SAT, and the subject tests if recommended. For the SAT, you can select send all scores on college board so you don’t pay for separate test scores like you have to with ACT. So they will take all scores, but they don’t need them all.
I still have the powerpoint slide with that info on it from the GC.
Regardless, @applicationhelp2, call the school, or spend 50+ bucks and send them all, don’t get info on here. An internet lesson: some people just have to be right even when they are wrong, proceed with caution.
Actually, @CADREAMIN is correct. As always, I suggest applicants review the school’s website/contact the school to get the most up-to-date information, an this always seems to be fluid.
This is all sounding like the UC’s have actually made the change but apparently have not got around to revising their website information which has been the same for about 7 years. The trend has generally been for schools that adopted an all scores rule in 2009, all of which did so as a knee-jerk reaction to College Board’s adoption of score choice, to drop their all scores rule and I would not be surprised that the UC’s would drop it.
And in response to applicationhelp2’s more recent question above, even under what appears may now be the former UC rule, you were never required to submit both SAT and ACT; you could always choose one or the other.
@uclaparent9 If your student is already in a school, things may have changed as they have here. Data/requirements should be verified each application cycle as poster above did.
All that wasted money from people sending test scores that aren’t needed and go directly into a digital trashcan with UCLA alone getting 100K applications…one extra score sent by each kid to UCLA is over a million bucks for college board. And some kids are sending 4 or 5 test scores, ugh. Not having updated information in this case just makes college board a lot of money. Too bad, for a lot of families it is tough paying for all those scores to be sent. As skieurope said always good to get current info.
