thanks for your replies...they've helped a lot! ;}
but i was kind of wondering about the writing subscore.........the part that tells u what score u got on your writing sample....it ranges from 2 to 12 ......and i was wondering if colleges will look at that score more than the other (multiple choice) subscore.........

usually 700+

the person i know got full scholarship at brown, i.e. paying 0 (zero) dollars

he got a writing 420, verbal 660, maths 720

what do u say ??
[/quote]

thats not true lol.

oooh they dont get ur breakdown im pretty sure. only ur score =D and they probably wouldnt look at the breakdown anyways. they just look at ur high scores

this person is lying
brown doesnt give full scholarships

XNORMAJEANX..........i have no interest in fooling u.......

this guy i am talking about is a very good fren of mine. and i am pretty sure that writing scores are not the only criterion for admission to an ivy. writing scores definitely are less important for internationals than for US citizens. besides, i am saying that everything else was great. rank 1. essay was mindblowing. 4 As in A-levels. great recs. great ecs. SAT scores are fairly good for internationals.

so, xnor....... if u still dont believe me, you can check with michael goldberger (dean of admission of brown) if am i correct that a guy from Nepal got in at full scholarship or not. the aid was not fully grant but also loan and work study. I could tell his name to u right here but i dunno if he will be ok with it.

so, xnor....... PUT ON UR THINKING CAP BEFORE U POST ANYTHING !!!!!!!!!!

I got a 700 and I'm a biochem major - so I'd have to say that looks good (especially since my highest SAT verbal is 640)

Eiffelguy, first I was stunned by your co-saluditorian. Goodness! but when you told me about your school, I knew what the deal was. See, my school typically sends 20% to 4 year colleges. Our school sucks big time, but it sounds like yours does more. But then I was stunned again when you said your valedictorian and other saluditorian are going to Harvard and Yale. We've NEVER sent anyone there. In fact, the best our school has done is once this guy got accepted to Rice. and a couple of years ago someone went to University of Chicago. So, wow, your school is extremely crazy in both extremes.

no colleges dont see your subscores...they dont even see your raw SAT score...they only see your scaled score...650+ should be enough for any ivy..a little lower might do depending on the other "hooks" you may have.

good luck. hope this helps.

I think a 400 verbal is a stretch, and without a distinguishable hook, it is definitely not a positive sign, for an Ivy school. In general, 700-800 is probably the expected, 650+ might still be ok.

the guy/gal who got in 2 brown, was he/she the daughter of the president at Brown or something?

no. he is from Nepal. his SAT II writing score is the only thing that looks bad in his app .
everything else is more than what brown could have asked for from someone from Nepal.

and the only reason he screwed his test was bcoz of the 20 min essay. I know this guy pretty well and his english is great !! no doubts on that !!

Everything told by ahtisisab is true.
I'm the person about whom he is talking about.
And its absolutely true that I got 420 in Writing.
I am from Nepal and I don't have any legacies behind me.

in at penn ed and

720m/610v

660 wr
660 m1c
560 ush

I was pretty worried about the 560.. that's 33rd percentile. i'm not a recruit or anything- i think test scores don't mean much if you meet the basic ranges and have strong other stuff.

also: Ivy doesn't give scholarships or financial need for foreigners.. they're cash cows. :P so you've gotta be lieing since brown doesnt give on merit

One thing you should keep in mind is your test scores compared to your intended major. For me, I got a 630 on the SATII:Writing, but I'm going into engineering at Cornell U. Someone who gets a 630 on writing and is applying for an english major is in deep trouble. The scores are all relative to your intended major.

sorry, what's ush? neostrife mentioned it.
Anyway..the worst thing is getting a 570 for writing, retaking it and getting a 540 on the second try.. =(

my previous roommate got into haverford, which is kinda like IVY. he has 540 writing score, 640 verbal (but >750 in all other sats subject test). got full aid ( P.C of 0). the interesting things is that he, with such low sat score, is one of three international students who recieve aid at haverford, and that too in early admission process. he is recruited in a cricket team though and has international achievement in cricket. hope this will help those who have low sats score.

Ahtsisab (wherever you got that name), I say that you are BSing. If your are not, however, then his family made quite a generous contribution (bribe) to the college, and I'm talking millions, especially if he does not have to pay annual tuition.
Eiffelguy87, could you explain the situation with the salutorian because it is unbelievable to be #2 in your class, if the classes in school are not on kindergarten level, and get such awful SAT scores? Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against him, but if you score in the range of 450-500 on SAT's and SATII's including, say, IC, writing and bio, then it means a variety of things: the person is bad at math, science and English. He is not a logical thinker nor a quick thinker. He has no sense of process of elimination, or mathematical problem-solving skills (I could go on). He or she may be gifted in arts, music, etc., but NOT academically inclined.
And to the original poster: you need a 700+. If you have lived all of your life in the English-speaking world, and you consider yourself to be intelligent, then you should be able to get that kind of a score. Buy a review book if you have a difficulty with the subject matter. I'm saying all this from experience.

ush = SAT II US History

I don't know if I mentioned this on this thread before, but I got in EA to MIT with a 570 in ...Physics - the only science SATII test I took. Writing - 750 but Math IC - 720

Check out PRStats.com for past ivy acceptees with <700 SAT2 writing scores. There are plenty in that range. The writing test is BS in my opinion..I have 800v but only 710w. For some reason, I only missed 1 MC but got a 7 on my essay. Those ********.

ivies dont give merit scholarships, daydreamer, if u went to brown you would know that ur going there on financial aid but i dont think many ivies are generous with internationals either....correct me if im wrong (about international aid, we all know they dont give merit scholarships) lol.
