With the coming of the new SAT (March 2005), the SATII Writing will cease to exist and be replaced by a Writing section tacked onto the standard SAT. To the best of my understanding, most schools that require an SATII Writing will accept the new SAT with Writing Section as a replacement.

My questions is, does anyone know which one college admissions people actually prefer, the SATII Writing or new SAT Writing Section? Also, does a 750 in one correlate directly with a 750 in another? Is one substantially harder than the other?

Finally, I'm class of 2006 and have taken the old SAT once (last week)...with the remaining January test date, do you think I should take the SATII Writing?

How the SAT II writing and new SAT section will equate is not clear although they are supposed to be close in content to each other. For 2006, the issue is not one of preference but one of acceptance. All schools will accept the new SAT for 2006 and the SAT II writing will not be necessary at all if you submit that test. However, a number of schools will not accept the old SAT at all and the SAT II writing will also not be accepted at those. Those that will accept either will also accept the SAT II writing (if the college traditionally required SAT II's)

I sent an e-mail to Swarthmore to clarify their position --they will take new SAT or old SAT + SAT II Writing for class of 2006. You could double check with the colleges that you're interested in.
