Next year I'm going to be a senior and need to take some SAT subject tests. My counselor reccomended French, U.S. History and Lit. because they feel those are the best suited for my interests (possible political science major). I don't really know much about the subject tests and how colleges view them, so do you think I should do a variety, like throw in a science (it'd be chemistry) or something in place of one of the others? Another question, but does a foreign language SAT II even look that good anyway? I'd rather not take French because it'd be with listening, and I'd only be able to take that one test on that day, but if it looks better for colleges I'd do it. Thanks

colleges dont really care if it "looks" better unless its math1 and math2. take the ones you feel will be BEST for you

take the subject in which you feel most comfortable. Like me, I took AP world history this year and I did very well, so I took the SAT world history.

take what suits you, if you need an extra third one, i suggest math 2c, lots of colleges require math sat 2, and math looks better than french

I would suggest a humanities, a science/math, and if you really need a third one, then you can take French. Most schools don't ask for three, however. So, check with your schools' Admissions web sites. BTW, you don't HAVE to take French w/listening, if you don't want to. There are two Foreign Language SAT IIs. But, if you are taking them in the fall, you might be right, because the Fr w/listening is only given in November. That might be what you mean. Again, though, double check if you need to take three.

As far as the language subject tests-it depends upon the strength of your high school program. My daughter took spanish all throughout high school (honors and ap). She received A's and was the strongest student in her class. Yet, the test was extremely over her head. She found it very difficult. We had heard this from her SAT tutor also, that the language exam is VERY hard.

The language exams are hard, that's true. But, many times, the curve that results in the scores reflect that difficulty. My D did very well in French throughout HS and took the Fr w/listening. She scored 670, which is pretty good. She also took the Fr language AP and got a 3. We were satisfied with those scores, as she did extremely well on her other SAT IIs. She was able to place into fourth semester French at her university (Ivy), which was definitely where she needed to be-- no higher.

take whatever tests that you think you'll score the highest on.

Thanks you guys. Judging by what you've said, I guess I'll pick math and history and forget about the French.

would it look bad if you took math 1 and math 2?

there is no point in taking Math 1 and Math 2. it doesnt show anything to colleges.....yes you are good at math....but what else...? is probably what an admissions officer would think
