Satire for an admissions essay?

That's pretty much all there is to say... Would a satire be acceptable/favorable to submit as an admissions essay?

It's definitely acceptable.
Admission people say they love GOOD essays that are not the usual stuff everyone writes. But they also say that many students apparently try to write funny or sarcastic essays but few really succeed.

If you've written satire before successfully it would be worth trying for the admission essay. Most people choose to default to a safer more candid, genuine essay out of fear, which is alright since it's what most people do. Satire will stand out; how people react to it is a matter of your writing skill.

Just make sure to tie back to the prompt otherwise you'll be in a world of regret.

Sometimes, satire can come off as too scathing. Make sure people of different tastes review your essay before sending it out. You don't want to make college admissions officers hate you immediately. It depends on how you carry out your satire.

I've read papers as a TA at an elite university. I can tell you that I never, ever, "got" that the satire was satire. Keep in mind that the persons reading your essays don't know you. Unless you preface your essay with the head's up "this is a satire", I would never risk it.

Honestly, I think satire might be a little risky. If the reader doesn't pick up the satiric nature of your essay, it can be disastrous and writing a well written satirical essay that shows who you are might be going for a little too much.

satire.... it depends on the topic. state a synopsis of your idea. i did a satire on the "look out your window and tell us what you see" essay and on "how would your favorite historical character respond to the world today".. the latter turning out less amazing due to struggling w/ historically correct facts, etc., and the heavy use of imagery and unsure of what tense to use.. anyway, it depends on your topic.

Yes, AS LONG AS it's well written and tasteful. Keep in mind who your readers are. Also, avoid gimmicks. Adcoms have seen everything.

If you read this board you'll realize anything will be better than the typical essays....how being an immigrant changed my life....My family's hard life....why I would have been val except....I want to be a doctor because my brother's sick....The amazing business I started under my parent's name, Satire sounds real good!

i would probably try to stay away from that. you never know who is reading your essay and if you happen to be attacking something they take very personally, then you're in trouble.

Hmmm - it really matters what kind of satire/humor you're up to. For example, I read an essay written greek myth style profiling the kid's rock band. It was very well done.... Not exactly satire, but I think certain kinds of humor really do well IF and ** ONLY IF ** they are done ** VERY WELL. **

Of course you want to make your paper standout, but satire is very hard to write. So much that most people don't as many people here have stated.

If you can pull it off, without sounding too... pretentious, ect. Go for it.

If you can't, or it can be taken in a very bad way? Don't. Go safer.
