Is it possible to satisfy the 4 year language requirement with 3 years of language in middle school, and 3 in high school? and do those middle school credits need to be reflected on the high school transcript or can a middle school transcript be submitted seperately?

My DD is trying to decide if she should take the 4th year in high school or skip it to fit an more interesting subject into her class schedule and she ( as her brother, W&M 2015 did) would love to have more opportunity for different classes in college. She is a French Honor Society Member.

Correct. We need to see Spanish IV, French IV, German IV, etc. It doesn’t matter if some of the earlier levels were taken in middle school nor does it matter whether those credits show up on your high school transcript. What we’re looking for is that you passed the fourth level of a single foreign language. However, if more advanced language classes are available, they’re definitely great courses to take. So if a student is going to end their language study, we recommend filling that space with another challenging, upper-level academic course.

Thank you! Yes she would be AP French ( Level V) for her final year. She wants to take Stats AP and it wont fit with her French class, at least she will know she has the option… And she will stay in Frecnh Club and Honor Society…

W&M, if a student is finished Spanish 4 first semester of 10th grade, would it be looked at unfavorably to start a new language (e.g., Latin) in 11th grade? My daughter’s school is on a 4 x 4 schedule where non-AP classes meet every day for an entire semester. Typically, in her school the 9th and 10th graders on the “rigor” track take only 1 AP course (which is year long) and the remaining courses meet each day in a semester, which allows for “doubling” of one core subject area. Most double language one year and math another.

She wants to take AP Calc AB, AP US History, AP English Lang and a UVA course next year in addition to Honors Physics and Latin I (and possibly Latin2). If it works, she might also add a Photography course.

@Jssaab, if your D wants AP Stats over AP French that is certainly fine.

@oldUVAGrad, certainly starting a second language after completing a high level in another is great. Taking AP Spanish if available is of course another possibility.

If the freshman has passed Level IV of Spanish, is he exempt right away or does he still have to take the placement test and pass the placement test?
