So I just took the SAT’s for the last time and… I bombed it. I ran out of time in reading, so I didn’t answer the last passage properly. And this was my last try.
I’m just depressed now. I mean, my reading&writing and math scores are terrible but my essay scores are near perfect. But they say essay scores won’t give much impact compared to other components.
I’ve worked so hard over the last four years when it came to my GPA and EC’s. And I feel like all those work will be going into waste because of my low SAT scores. And I don’t think I am the only one who’s thinking this.
Logically, colleges would care more about smart + hard worker than just a hard worker. If I knew that I wasn’t going to score high on my SAT’s, I would’ve never push myself until I was going through intense stress where I had to experience vaginal bleeding, eating disorder, countless constipations, hair loss, etc. (sorry for this disgusting story)
I know that the standardized tests aren’t everything. But it looks like everyone on College Confidential seems so obsessed with those scores, and that tells me that it is indeed one of the most important factors in admissions. I even heard if you have low SAT scores, colleges won’t even look at your application throughly because they would pile it into “the later priorities” and start looking into other application with higher SAT scores. If that’s true, then… That’s too cruel. )’:
So what do you guys think about my situation? Do I have hopes or nah?
Sorry for sharing a pathetic and depressing story. I hope all of us make it through! (:
There are many test optional schools out there. I’m sorry you feel you failed to deliver but test scores do not reflect who you are. I am sure that you will find a college out there that you love and would love to have you.
When I took the October ACT, I legitimately thought I bombed the math section and gotten like a 22 (I randomly bubbled in ~15 questions due to running out of time). However, I somehow got a 30 on it. I know it isn’t the best subscore and was substantially lower than my other ones but sometimes, your expectations can be defied by results. Stay hopeful. And remember-you are more than a test score. Even if your scores may be below the middle 50% of the colleges you want to go to, if they like you as a person and have acceptable grades, they may very well accept you. That’s the uniqueness of applying to college in 'Murica-they aren’t based solely on scores.
You have spent high school making yourself a mental, physical, and moral wreck on the altar of college admissions instead of spending 4 years learning and growing. Will you do the same in college on the altar of grad school? And will you do this in grad school on the altar of a career? Maybe soften the focus on yourself and material gain and look at a bigger picture. You will be much happier and fulfilled if you do so, and I do so wish you the best!
Hey, keep your head up! So many schools are becoming test optional nowadays. A good test optional school is George Washington University, so hopefully you consider applying there.

hope this helps! don’t worry so much
I will be really cold and blunt with you. So you come on CC and say how you bombed the exam. So what? Are you thinking that colleges admission officers will notice you and have pity on you and get you into their college?
But do you know what’s worse? That you are feeling as if you do not have hopes AT ALL, thinking “all those work will be going into waste because of [your] low SAT scores.”
It’s not hard to see people like you who are overly obsessed with SAT. But don’t forget, SAT is a (ONE) factor of evaluation, and there are tons of other things that are factored in when evaluating applicants as well. Do you think colleges will view four HOURS as important than four YEARS? Please grow up, high school backgrounds are LOT MORE important than a single SAT score. If you have “worked so hard over the last four years when it came to [your] GPA and EC’s,” then they will back you up. Don’t be a crybaby.
Also, you should have a better mindset. Don’t forget, college is NOT a life. It does NOT determine your life at all. If you are really desperate to get into the best college, then try to do better in the college, as you can still transfer from a college to another. You still have another chance. It is not hard to see alumni of prestigious colleges who graduated after transferring from “worse, easier” colleges. Your life is NOT over, if you are still thinking this is it.
Thank you guys! You all really calmed me down and help me think straight about my next actions. (: Thanks again!
