I am currently preparing for the tenth grade and my first in high school (living in Canada). I am wondering whether you would recommend that I take the SAT now and then later, just to get a feel for it. Would I have to include my initial score on college applications? Would it look good for me that I attempted it early? All comments are welcome.

You definitely won’t score your highest score as early as 10th grade if you plan on taking it more than once. That being said, you would be taking it just to get the feel of it. I don’t think colleges would see it as a plus that you took it so early. I think you can get a reasonable feel for the test by taking the PSATs with SAT prep (lots of practice tests) if you’re a pretty good student. I’m not sure what test taking is like in Canada, but you will have many more chances in the future to take the SAT when you are readier.

You may not have learned everything for the math portion yet (on the normal SAT) so taking it later will be to your advantage.

I would definitely recommend that you start preparing early.

Wait Wait…
Don’t some schools, like MIT, take the highest scores you got?
This is what I was thinking.
I’m in 8th grade, and I’ve taken it last year and this year. I took the SAT two weeks ago unofficially and scored a 2080. (CR:630/W:660/M:790)
Do a lot of schools take the highest score?

yeahhhh even taking SATs in 10th grade is a little overkill. most people take SATs twice (at most 3 times). i took them twice (CR:690 M:750 W:750) and it’s more about what and how you study than actually being in the room spending five hours taking the thing. if you take them officially then you do send all of your scores however most colleges will only consider the highest ones. i would say it’s definitely to your advantage to start studying early but there’s no need to take them until junior year (as late as may is fine).

Oh thanks for all the replies. Yeah I don’t think I’ll take them till probably the start of next year then. One mroe question though: So you DO send the colleges ALL of your scores? I want to go to Cornell or Duke probably (Although deep down I’d rather go to Harvard or MIT, but that’s aiming rather high for somebody who hasn’t started high school and has no idea of the challenges…) Would they see the lower scores taken earlier? How would they jusge that? I know that you can’t know for sure, but any input would be super helpful!
