I was wondering if anyone can tell me how important class rank is. If my child has a high GPA and number 1 ranking in a class of 400 at a top level school but low SAT' s will the test score hurt her chances of getting in to some schools. Like Harvey Mudd, LMU or Clarmont McKenna. 4.4 gpa taking all Honers and AP classes she can. Around 1900 to 2000 on sat's. EC are sports where she performs at a high level and will continue to play in college. She is in 3 to 4 clubs like NHS and has some volunter work behind her but her sports take a good amount of her time, 20 tio 30 hrs a week. So not much time to have a job. Do the colleges give aid and meret scholarships based on test scores or other factors. Any comments would be helpful thanks.

If she is good enough to get recruited, try to take that route. An SAT of 1900 is not high enough for a school like Harvey Mudd.

Rank is probably the most important factor at most colleges, but a below par SAT score will really hurt at highly selective schools. Has she considered SAT optional schools? There are some great ones. Also have her try the ACT.

I would think LMU would be easy with these stats but it might limit merit aid.

I think she has excellent chances at LMU also. Best of luck!

Where are you getting this information? I’ve heard the transcript is the most important factor, but this includes everything from GPA to course rigor to rank.

OP, I’d recommend your D get her SAT 2100+ if at all possible (and it is very possible if she is committed to prepping, whether indepently or with a tutor, though most Kaplan classes and the like are not worth your money). SATs are a significant factor–a 4.0 candidate from my school received some rejections that were incredibly surprising to her but more than likely had to do with her 1900 SAT score.
