A) because of supposedly revealing the presence of poison
B) because it was supposed to reveal the presence of poison

The answer is B) and I choose B) as well. Is it because, A) means ancient rulers were reveal the presence of poison which should be in B)(it refers to celadon porcelain ) that celadon porcelain reveals the presence of poison… is it right?? And can you tell me what the type of error is?

A) of believing that the ship was unsinkable
B) they believed that the ship was unsinkable

The answer is B) and I choose B) as well. But you explain why A is wrong? I choose B because “that” in A) is ambiguous (don’t know what “that”is referring to)!

A) attention, which cause his talking
B) attention; he therefore talks

The answer is B) and I choose B) as well. But A) is wrong because which modify human attention and it deson’t make sense! And it should be “which causes” instead of which cause (s-v agreement)? Is it right? Can you tell the error type?

Electronic bulletin boards, combining the convenience of a telephone with the massive information storage capacity of a computer, present messages on (diverse subjects as) astronomy, artificial intelligence, and skydiving.

(Among) the discoveries (made possible by) (the invention of) the telescope (they found) that dark spots existed on the Sun in varying numbers. (No error)

The answer is (they found), it is wrong because of “among discoveries” (singular)? What should I change (they found) to? Or because (they) is ambiguous pronoun? And this sentence is passive should it be like (Among the discoveries was made possible by the invention.. blah blah)? I don’t know help!!

Twenty-five years (after) Alex Haley’s Roots (stimulate) many people (to research) their family histories, new technology has been developed to make the task (easier). (No error).

Many ancient Eastern rulers favored drinking vessels made of celadon porcelain (because of supposedly revealing the presence of poison) by cracking.
A) because of supposedly revealing the presence of poison
B) because it was supposed to reveal the presence of poison

A is ambiguous because it fails to indicate the subject of “supposedly revealing the presence of poison” (it can be the rulers)

The second one is primarily the same.
A is wrong because it can be the people of the Titanic to “believing that the ship was unsinkable”
I don’t think there’s any problem with “that”. believe + that clause

Maybe A should be “diverse subjects such as” to be correct
B indicates that there are only three subjects “astronomy, artificial intelligence, and skydiving”

“they found” should be changed to “it”

I think it should be stimulated

change “his books” to “him”

it should be condemn as

thanks, but in number 6) question isn’t it wrong because of the ambiguous subject??? (“they”)

I’m guessing the (has receive) should be (has received) and you just made a spelling error?

I was going to give you my opinion on this questions, but it seems like you have already gotten them answered. Anyways, if you still need my help, just tell me!

Yep. “they” is amiguous. But I think the main problem is the subject should be consistent with “among the discoveries”.

Thanks for answering
By the way, for question 6), I thought “they found” should be change to “found”, omitting ”they”. Because when it change to “it found”, it is illogical to say “among the discoveries found that dark spots and so on” which means discovery itself found the discoveries. But I though, it should be more like “the invention of the telescope found that dark spots existed on ,”. Or I think, it should change to more like: Among the discoveries made possible by the invention of the telescope, it was found that dark spots existed on the Sun in varying numbers.
I don’t know!!! What do you think??

And for question9, is it idiom question?? So “condemn as” is an idiom???

Can someone also answer these questions?? I got all right, but I am double checking, why the origin of sentence is wrong!! So please explain these questions for me!!! thanks

1) The owners of stadiums that bear the names of now bankrupt companies have a problem (what to do about the names).
A) what to do about the names
B) deciding what to do about those names

The answer is B) and A) is wrong because it is illogical? Or because of “about the names” is wrong to indicate “the names of now bankrupt companies”?

2) A discovery in New Jersey actually contributed to the early economic development of (America and, in 1712, a worker uncovered a green rock containing copper).
A) America and, in 1714, a worker uncovered
B) America when, in 1714, a worker uncovered

The answer is B) and can you explain why A) is wrong? Is it because A) is not connecting the sentence correctly???

3) Winslow Homer, one of America’s foremost artists (spent his last 27 years and painted) on the scenic Maine coast.
A) spent his last 27 years and painted
B) spent his last 27 years painting

The answer is B) and can you explain why A) is wrong? Is it because A) is illogical???

4) When the Berlin Wall, long a symbol of the Cold War, began to be torn down in 1989, five million people went to Berlin (to celebrate that).
A) to celebrate that
B) to celebrate

The answer is B) and can you explain why A) is wrong? Is it because A) “that” is ambiguous pronoun??? And B) is more concise than A)

5) (In similarity with) some of other great works, the enduring horror tale Frankenstein was first published anonymously; its author, Mary Shelley, wrote the novel when she was not quite nineteen years old.
A) In similarity with
B) Like
The answer is B) and can you explain why A) is wrong?

Thanks for reading this!!

1) A is illogical. The sentence needs a verb supported problem. For ex, I have a problem solving a puzzle or I have a problem working under stress.
2) “When” seems better than “And”. It clearly indicates the mentioned time. If you put “and” here, it does not really make sense.
3) It is just an usual expression, like “spend 2 hours going around the hall” or “spend times doing sth”
4) NO IDEA
5) This is idiomatic problem. You can say that “bear similarity to” or “similar to” but not “in similarity with”. Besides, “like” is more concise and perfectly idiomatic.
Hope this helps

4) When the Berlin Wall, long a symbol of the Cold War, began to be torn down in 1989, five million people went to Berlin (to celebrate that).
A) to celebrate that
B) to celebrate

The pronoun “that” in (A) is unnecessary. And worse. The antecedent of “that” is unclear. The writer’s intent is that “that” refer to preceding clause. This kind of broad reference is fine, to a point, in spoken English, but not in formal writing.

I’m troubled by some of your other questions, such as:

Many ancient Eastern rulers favored drinking vessels made of celadon porcelain (because of supposedly revealing the presence of poison) by cracking.
A) because of supposedly revealing the presence of poison
B) because it was supposed to reveal the presence of poison

and

People were unprepared of the sinking of the Titanic simply because (of believing that the ship was unsinkable).
A) of believing that the ship was unsinkable
B) they believed that the ship was unsinkable

Perhaps you’ve mis-transcribed these. They both are poor English. Choice (B) for 1 is awful.

Yes, condemn as is an idiom.
And for question 6, I think “it was found” is OK.
I made a mistake in my former post… I meant Among…, is that…

Thanks everyone!!!

fogcity: well these questions are from official college board sat practice test 2007-2008 and 2011-12!!!
and I don’t think i mis-transcribed these questions ! (i checked twice)!!! and they are all correct answers!!! why do you think they are awful???
