We are patiently waiting to hear back from our last six schools for BFA acting. We have researched all programs but I would like to know more about Savannah College of Art and Design as far as parent/student impressions and/or recommendations of their BFA acting program. This is the only program where I don’t feel comfortable with the amount of information we have to make a solid decision. I’ve also read some things on CC about concerns in some areas regarding location, crime and administration issues, but it’s kind of murky. If there are any current students at SCAD in the BFA acting program, I would really appreciate you comments.
My daughter is a performing arts major. Savannah is a fantastic city and so much fun to live in and visit. SCAD has one of the top film programs so there are a lot of film acting possibilities. My husband just saw a play there last weekend and said it was excellent. PM if you have any specific questions.
Thank you @mtmom2014. If my D gets accepted I’ll PM you. We have visited Savannah years ago and it is a beautiful city.
My D is accepted at SCAD for BFA performing arts. We are awaiting scholarship info. I would love to hear more about your daughter’ experience, @mtmom2014. What other schools did she consider/audition for? And, why did she choose SCAD?
She has been invited to SCAD day but hasn’t heard about acceptance unless we are missing something. We are entertaining a trip for SCAD day but only if she gets acceptance.
I don’t think there is a separate artistic acceptance. My daughter wanted a warm climate so said no to Montclair, Marymount and a couple of other acting and MT programs. She has done many films there, is part of their by audition group called Performance Ensemble and is in the Spring musical. They have a casting office on campus and she works there, as well as participating both in front and behind the camera in a tv series they produce. There are many opportunities there and a lot of talent.
I had to edit that post as I got them confused with another school. We should hear something soon regarding acceptance. She thought her audition at Chicago Unifieds went well so we will see. My D is very interested in film/tv aspect so that is great to hear. Thank you for sharing.
Congratulations to your daughter @momto2artists.
Visited SCAD this past weekend during SCAD day. We were impressed with the program. Lots to consider and think about.
@WorkOfHeart17 Glad you enjoyed the visit! We enjoyed SCAD day back in late Feb. as well. Does your D have her aid package yet? We were not pleased with our D’s offer, but have not yet called to discussion options with them.
Just received it today. It’s smaller than expected…
@mtmom2014 - I have a daughter who is Senior at Marymount Manhattan and am used to that type of program. My younger daughter is interested in SCAD and the performing arts program. Do they study voice, acting and dance? I am very interested in any insight you have to the program. Thanks so much!
Nordeal, sorry to take so long to respond, not on here much anymore. I do not feel the program is great for true MT kids. It just isn’t their focus.
hi mtmom2014 do you feel that it’s a great acting program? I was a bit perplexed by the acceptance to Scad November 3rd when we applied for regular admission and was hoping to hear back after the new year. It came so soon (which made me question their program). We had added this school as a safety. My next door neighbor has a daughter at SCAD for design however my S. has a classmate who is at SCAD this year as a freshman and already has filmed a Pilot for Netflix in Oct. He was an excellent drama student at their HS and won a Monologue competition that was nationwide and took him to NYC… We were certain that he was going to apply to Juilliard or another strong conservatory program however he seems to love Savannah and is doing well at SCAD. We are still on the fence about the program (acting/drama)
@momto2artists we were selected for financial verification and I recently uploaded additional forms and my S will audition for scholarship in Chicago.I don’t like that they request you to put a deposit down for a dorm room without us having any financial package to see if it’s financially worth it. I’m curious how long it took to get any award letters. Scad seems to cost on average as many of the other theatre/acting 4yr programs. I hope it’s worth it. I can’t stress how much I absolutely LOVE Savannah but I will not be living there, he will but will give me so many reasons to stay at my favorite B&B’s and visit often
I wouldn’t go to Scad. An article came out in the AJC recently about Scad’s business/employment practices, return on investment, etc. Read it before you make firm decisions either way. Thanks
I did see this article being passed around on Facebook and on CC regarding money and acceptances into SCAD. Not sure if this would change any person’s mind although it’s nice to always be informed http://www.comicsbeat.com/report-the-scad-scam/
They are starting to send out financial aid letters this week
My daughter has done several films and productions there and enjoyed the city. I have seen some good work from students both in productions and at their showcases (which only a few students are chosen for.) BUT, it is not a conservatory style program. It is not a BFA in acting, but in performance arts.
I have all the same questions and concerns of the original poster on this thread. It seems like it’s hard to get a picture of what the program is about and a day in the life in the Performing Arts program. I’m also confused about the acceptance as I was waiting to hear about getting an audition at Unifieds - we did submit videos for one of the scholarships, and just received acceptance to the school?! Odd. This school was added as someone told us about it and it looked interesting and its the only school that is not a true MT program that he’s applied. Now i want to know all that I can about this program… We are too far to visit right now, will wait until audition season is over and then decide if we want to make the trip there. But any and all specific information about the program is very much appreciated!!
My daughter is attending SCAD in the Fall but is now having second thoughts about not having gone to a straight Musical Theater school. Could you message me about what your daughter’s experience has been like? What year is she? Will she be minoring as well?
