Savannah College of Art and Design BFA Acting (Recommendations/Impressions)

What did your son decide? Will he go to SCAD?

My D is applying to acting BFA and BA programs. We just learned via SCAD Admissions that auditions are not required or really considered for the Acting BFA or any performing art, really. I thought that was odd, but kind of refreshingly democratic, or perhaps more a sign of the fact that they are primarily a design/art school vs. performing arts school. They also attend Unified auditions - so this would just be to get a scholarship? Thanks for these comments! Also applying to NYU, Fordham, Pace, Rutgers (for acting).

If you have any info on SCADā€™s Performing Arts major that you would share with me, please post here or pm me. D considering it for Fall 2019. Iā€™m curious as to the pros/cons of this type of major since it is not a BFA. I am also wondering what the vibe on campus is like.

iā€™m interested too for my D. I was impressed with what I saw on a campus visit, but Iā€™m concerned about the quarter system. The emphasis on film and tv ticks boxes for us as well.

A friend of my daughters goes to SCAD, although it is not for Performing Arts, and he is very happy there! Heā€™s a sophomore. We toured and considered it but honestly were not impressed with the faculty at the time and heard a lot of rumors (just rumors, no hard facts) that faculty turnover was high. Also, the cost factor considering they donā€™t give a lot of scholarship money came into play. Our daughter loved the idea of Savannah being her ā€œcampusā€ since the school is pretty spread out. Iā€™d say if film and tv are high on the list of priorities, itā€™s definitely a great place to consider since they have their own agency. Good luck!

@CMB625 Thanks for your input. Does you Dā€™s friend know anything about the Performing Arts major? Are graduates getting booked for Musical Theater or is it mostly for TV/Film careers? I am sad to hear there is not much scholarship money being offered. :frowning:

@hfstt201 , I sent you a pm.

@hfstt201 The website does show a BFA in Performing Arts. Iā€™m curious what others have to say about the program as well.

My daughter transferred from the BFA acting program at University of Oklahoma to the performing arts program at SCAD this past Fall. I can only speak about our experience but it has been wonderful. In the short time she has been there she has had some life changing experiences and opportunities. I donā€™t want to sound like a spokesperson for the program, I believe each student and experiece is so different and I have read negatives on the scad parent page (maybe ask to join them on FB?) My daughter is very focused on learning, experiencing, and connecting with the real world of a working actor and having a career. She loves her classes, instructors are actually working actors with loads of current advice. Along with her classes she has had so many opportunities. She has worked on films being shot in Savannah, and worked at the film/fest there and the tv/fest (?) in Atlanta. She has done at least 2 student films, many many auditions. She has been to so many presentations by people in the industry from top casting directors to Juliane Moore and Armie Hammer talking about their experiences in the business. This summer she is going to take acting classes in Lacoste France for 8 weeks at SCADā€™s campus over there.
Savannah is an interesting city. Some areas are great some not. The freshman seem to really be supported, they live in designated housing and are grouped purposely to help facilitate relationships moving forward. My daughter missed this coming in as a sophomore so had some catching up to do. It seems like joining anything and everything and connecting to student groups/parent groups is very important at SCAD since it is a non traditional campus with building spread all over the city. I donā€™t think any school is perfect but for us SCAD has been a great fit.

It is a BFA:)

Thanks @lakeharper ! Thatā€™s really helpful. My D has 3 options so far and is undecided, but SCAD seems like a good fit. I was impressed at our visit and it seems to be an up and coming program.

@lakeharper Thank you so much for this! Iā€™ve been trying to find more info from current SCAD students! Any other details you can offer are welcome!!

My D was accepted to SCAD with no audition required. Was not impressed with program when toured campus.

If I can answer any questions feel free to message me. My D will be a junior next year and itā€™s been a great experience.

Do you know if you take theater classes if you are an art major or vice versa? My daughter would like to pursue both fields of study. Thanks.

@lakeharper Did your D transfer from another theatre program? Does she feel challenged by the instruction and the talent of her cohort? Iā€™m a bit concerned because the audition at SCAD seemed more of a formality than a real assessment. My D has been accepted to some competitive programs but I think sheā€™s attracted by SCADā€™s industry approach, school size and location.
