In the additional information section should I add my bragsheet which has a more detailed description of my activities and awards and such or should I add an essay I wrote that explains why participating in afterschool activities was especially tough for me?

It will hurt more than help. If they wanted additional information they would have beaten it out of you.

That said, if you have a great essay, mail it to the school and ask for it to be added to your file. Colleges like kids that can write however, they don’t like essays that come across as having an agenda … so it better be both good and not looking like you’re making excuses.

Is having to take care of my newborn sister as though she were my own for the entire four years of my high school career (I have no social life) an excuse or an unfortunate circumstance that would shed light on my situation?

I think a good essay on that topic (not too much self-pity; but some regrets ok) is fine. Perhaps include some lessons learned.

Good luck

Think about why you call this, “a situation”. It’s not at all unusual for kids to have to care for a younger sibling. Only add this if you have an interesting story about why you were the primary caregiver.

The adcoms are not looking to accept the most popular or the most social, so even though you’ve been busy with family responsibilities, that won’t necessarily keep you from getting accepted.

I suggest you elaborate about your achievements and awards. Much more positive.

thanks everyone :)
