Save Dr. Pierson

I was the person to break on this forum of the news of Dr. Pierson being let go next semester. We need to keep him here. He is a good professor for genetics.
here is a facebook petition. Please sign it.

Petition For Dr. Burton Pierson | Facebook

I signed for you. Hope it helps.

Thank you Fiyero. In case any body else do not know who he is, he is a genetics professor here at the University of Texas. He is an extremely gifted lecturer and he is one of the rare persons at this university who does everything he can to help his students… even outside of office hours. rare at this school. please read the description about the group. I have never taken his classes before, but many of my closer friends from high school are working to get this petition out. So I am working with them for more people to join this group.

Why is he being let go?

yea why is he being let go?

Top notch professor, but I can’t sign anything until I know why he’s being fired

TxHorn, he is fired because of budget cuts I believe, but they will not go into the specifics of why they fired him as opposed to other lecturers. And TxHorn, you don’t have to “sign” the petition, you can join the facebook group.

The group description says there’ll be a petition to help overturn the decision, but not up yet

Oh really, I thought the joining the Facebook group counted… anyways.

I’m sure that this group can make the cause viral, but I think it’s the petition that counts.

Oh, okay then. I will be waiting for the petition too.

looks like he will be a valuable asset to another university

Pierre, I don’t appreciate that message. I am trying to advocate keeping the prof. here, and what you are saying is rude. How would you know when he will be hired again? Although I have been here for a semester, I know that there are few profs. here who diligently help undergraduates succeed. I was asked by one of my friends to help in the effort. And comments like what you have posted was not conducive to this topic.

if he is as good as a professor as you say, then he will get hired somewhere else.

lol @ pierre!!

It just seems odd that they would let him go for no good reason. Even if he is being let go due to budget cuts, I’d think they would have carefully evaluated all the lecturers in making the decision. There may be another side to the story. My dad’s on the faculty, and I remember him talking about the few times his department let someone go - they take it very seriously.

let go for what?! someone explain please

He was let go for budget cuts for the upcoming fall 2010 school year. Now if there may be some other reasons we are not aware, the administration is not talking.

He looked like a pretty cool prof to take for genetics Fall '10.
Seems like a great prof from the Facebook comments.

An excellent biology teacher was “let go” from my kids’ school. He was a great teacher…made himself available anytime, connected with the students, covered the material wholly, etc. He was growing weed in his garage, though. Who knew. The school didn’t have a choice and, no matter how great of a teacher he was, they simply had to fire him.
