<p>Aren’t classes taught at the same time one is expected to be at work?</p>
<p>At some (most?) universities, members of the staff are allowed to take one course per semester for free. Their work schedule is adjusted accordingly. It is a great deal, indeed.</p>
<p>There are lots of universities which offer night classes for people looking to complete a MS but are still fully employed.</p>

<p>And if you’re in the sciences/engineering, $20,000 a year is a pretty low stipend. too. ;)</p>
