Hi,

Sorry if there's already a thread, I did have a look but I have kind of specific questions...

So I'm coming to UCLA this year through the EAP Reciprocal exchange, so I think that means I count as a transfer student. Anyway I got my housing offer, I was hoping for residential halls but I got put in Saxon Suites. They sound fine from other threads on here, but the only thing that worries me is meeting people. To be honest I'm not the most social person and I'm okay as long as I have a few good friends, not hugely bothered about parties. Like, at my home uni I live in a house with 11 other people who are great and I have a few friends from my course but that's it- but, I only live an hour away from home where my home friends are, so it's a bit different and I think it's probably going to be really important that I have friends when I'm 5000 miles away from home!

So do you think I'll meet enough people to be happy in Saxon? I was planning on joining some societies anyway, so I guess that'll help.

Also, are Saxon suites nice?

Thanks so much & thanks for this forum, it's really helpful :) xxx

I’m living there right now. Everything people say about it is true. It’s pretty isolated, and definitely more difficult to make friends than if you were in a hall. Also, most people move into Saxon with their friends after being here for a year or two, which makes it even more difficult. I, much like you, am not the most social person, and as a first year I’ve definitely had to find other ways to make friends. Not trying to scare you or anything, just being honest. You might have a completely different experience though, so don’t think its impossible.

As for Saxon being nice…yes, the rooms are amazing. It’s like a mini apartment without the kitchen. Whenever people visit me from a hall they are in awe at the amount of space that I have.

Good luck. I’m sure you’ll make friends. There’s going to be thousands of people in the same boat as you, so don’t worry about it.

Honesty is what I was looking for! Thanks very much. American friends tell me people don’t really make friends with people in their classes, which I find odd because that’s not true at all in the UK- is that true? I’m sure I’ll find other ways to make friends like you said, anyway, just find it curious.

Thanks for your help :)

Are suites same sex or coed? Or, are just the rooms same sex and suites coed?

Libbyliblib, I made plenty of friends in my classes, but that was mostly first quarter of freshman year when everyone is looking to make friends. You have a better chance of making more friends through clubs. The social life may be lacking in Saxon, but having your own living room is awesome.

cassert, I don’t live in Saxon but I visit my friends there often, and from what I see, the suites are same sex.

Thanks WhiteFlag, that’s good to know. I am excited about the living room, I live in a house at my uni so I was sad about losing the communal spaces. Though we do share one fridge between 12 people so not gonna miss that!

i got saxon suites as well! i’m excited to be living there but a little bummed about the social scene because i’m transferring as a sophomore and i figure it might be a little bit harder to make friends but like you, i’m also going to rush for sororities!

I’m in Saxon Suites as well! I’m doing EAP so I’m going to be doing my third year in LA. I’m not really sure where the best place to live would be, and I can’t decide whether or not to put in for a transfer. If I did, would anyone recommend anywhere? Obviously I want to meet people, but I’m not sure I want to live in a hall with all the freshmen when I’m going to be older!

Any advice would be amazing!

Well, I’m going to be living there and I’m 20 so you can be friends with meee :p

Are Hitch Suites as socially isolated as Saxon? I am a freshman who got a triple in Hitch.
